'General' (read Ordinary 45-seater) class express bus, KRW 22000, 4.5 hours,

The lowest Mugunghwa-class train costs KRW 26500, FYI.

If you're looking for the absolute cheapest option, the Korean Tourism Organization offers a FREE bus between Seoul and Busan for foreigners. You can't get any cheaper than free.

However, there are some restrictions....

Must reserve at least 10 days in advance

Only one trip in each direction each day (no flexible schedule)

For foreigners only (can't travel with a Korean friend)

Must show your passport (ARC not good enough)

If more reservations are made than there are seats in the bus they select by random lottery 10 days before departure (not first come first served)

Does not operate on Mondays

Will cease operation after December 31st

But hey, it's free....

The bus is very nice with plush seats and lots of leg room.

When I called to book it, they said you were only allowed take the bus starting off from Seoul to Busan return. They didn't allow me to take it one way or return starting from Busan.
