funny MTV says "talent and sheer ambition" but they lack the former. Honestly their music sounds like same old same old.

Hmmmm, Korean pop stars winning an online vote? I'm shocked!

Online vote? Read "Koreans jam the servers again trying to promote/defend something to do with their nation."
That's how Rain won "Most Important Man in The Universe. Ever." recently. Seriously, what is so good about K-POP? It all sounds so contrived and similar to 90's/10's western pop. They all want to sound like Beyonce, Mariah or R-Kelly.
Absolute Bollocks.

K-Pop is never about marketing the music; it's all about marketing a "new" concept. It's never about the voice but the image. How many times can a K-Pop act re-invent themselves as something fresh and interesting? It's getting tiresome now!

Didn't Milli-Vanilli win awards as well?

God I hate to say this, but it might come to the point where South Korean IPs ought to be banned for stuff like this- Time Most Important People, 7 Wonders of the World, etc- just because shut-in netizens are distorting the hell out of things.

But to be fair, this is MTV Iggy, the sort of international up-and-coming music deal, so I guess 2ne1 kinda fits here.

Ya'll are pretty ignorant on this one.

2NE1 didn't win because of Koreans voting for them. They won because they are one of the biggest acts in all of Asia, and have a huge following in SE Asia. They have a rabid fan base, which you can be sure voted for them hundreds of times.

I get the general "hate" of K-pop. It's not for everyone. While blanket statements like, "They all sound the same" or "they aren't original" are fair, but the same could be said about a lot of genres of music. Tell me that "Iron and Wine" is different from "Bon Iver", or is Skrillex really that different from Deadmau5?

Not to mention calling this "Korean Nationalism" reeks of paranoia.

Maybe you aren't familiar with how Koreans use the internet. I don't hate K-Pop because of any nationalistic bent. I hate it because it is dreadful pap and it annoys the shit out of me.

Ditto. I'm sick of basically being called anti-Korean any time I question the artistic integrity of the latest mass-produced girl/boy band consisting of scantily clad teens/early-twenty-somethings inevitably produced by one of the same three producers that produce everybody. Trust me, I'd hate this stuff just as much anywhere else. I'm an equal opportunity hater people!

If they exchanged the numbers, maybe they could have got 2NE1 voted into the 7 natural wonders of the world and Jeju as the Best New Band.

Most pop in the world is whack. Kpop takes the cake, though. This is some tired ol' bit. There was a link about 3 months or more back where Rails and some others posted some decent Kor music from youtube.
I even mildly enjoyed some of it.

And, the previous poster must not be familiar with the way Ks use the internet. 2NE1? Jeju? C'mon. Jeju is worth a visit, but I don't think I'd ever wish Kpop sounds on anyone.

Actually, I see the Jeju, 2NE1 and Big Bang focus as progress towards a more positive outlook for Netizens.

Its way better than death threats to football referees, stalking ESL teachers and comparing speed skaters to terrorists.

In fact, it is probably possible to play starcraft one handed while alternating the other hand between voting continuously along with that other one handed activity they spend their time on.
