Should I request a new one from the distributor?
It's a very small ticking but when the room is quiet, I can hear it sitting 2-3 feet away from it. I'm sure it comes from the HDD and not from the cooling fans. It's not rhytmical but very frequent (every 1-2-3 seconds or so) Exchange or is it normal?
The cooling is otherwise very quiet and perhaps I wouldn't even hear this ticking if the vents wouldn't be so quiet. |

That's bad. Could mean the pins reading it on the inside are getting damaged- give jackdaniels a PM |

Could be the sound of the read/write heads on the hard drive.
Try making sure the power and SATA cables are securely connected on both ends. If you still hear unusual noise, tell them to put in a new hard drive. |

A service man came from the company within 2 hours after calling.
He said it's normal and no need to replace it. I trust that he is telling his honest opinion. He examined and took out the hard drive etc.
It's really quiet and I don't even hear it anymore. I just never had a computer with so quite cooling system so this little noise always got covered by the vents. |

Healthy HDD's do make a kind of grinding noise..........but a tick is not a healthy sound.
Just make sure any important files on that HDD are backed up. |

External (USB) drives with no extra power supply can make this noise if they are underpowered (what pkang said), but normally they would not be accessible for rad/write while they do that.
Any other drive I ever had that started to make a ticking noise broke down permanently shortly after that. Without exception. Without possibility of recovery.
Hard drives make strange noises, particularly when they spin up or shut down, and during heavy read/write tasks, and sometimes their vibration is amplified by the way they have been installed in a computer case. But they're not clocks and thus should not tick while under normal operation.
Increase your backup frequency nd keep the service number at hand. |

Just for your peace of mind download HD Tune and do a full scan.
If any sectors come up in red means failure is not far down the road. |
