PPP:
Q: Do you think the Republicans are intentionally stalling efforts to jumpstart the economy to insure that Barack Obama is not reelected or not? Yes: 50% No: 41% Unsure: 10%

This comes on the heels on a very similar poll conducted solely in Florida, which produced nearly identical responses. A Washington Post/ABC News poll released yesterday also found 50% of Americans nationwide agree with the statement that President Obama is making a good faith effort to deal with the countrys economic problems, but the Republicans in Congress are playing politics by blocking his proposals.

The polls come at the same time as a New York Times editorial that stated, simply as an obvious fact, that congressional Republicans are committed to doing nothing to improve the economy in the hopes that the faltering economy will cost President Obama his job in 2012.

Taken together, this is a rather striking shift.. Were talking about the American mainstream accepting the idea that a major political party, for the first time since the Civil War, actively trying to undermine the strength of the United States in a time of economic crisis.

At a fundamental level, that is, or at least should be, an incredible scandal. As Brian Beutler put it, [I]f the notion that elected Republicans are blocking economic recovery for political gain becomes a mainstream proposition, theyve got big trouble.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, the GOP was commonly thought to be the party of the rich, the bankers, the party that favored the haves.

Then something happened. The Dems got labelled as the party weak on the commies, the party that 'lost' China and Vietnam, the party weak on defense. At the same time, coincidentally, the Dems lost their racist conservative wing which migrated, on a wing and a prayer, to the GOP. A new governing coalition emerged, based on big business, fear of foreigners, and the evangelical right. The business wing was able to control the other wings while using their votes to stay in power without really giving them too much in legislation, all the while driving the country deeper and deeper into debt.

So we have a 'conservative' party/movement that is:

a) bamboozled by the business elite into defending their 'right' to priviledge property over human rights in the name of 'liberty'

b) gung-ho about supporting war in the Middle East if it can trigger Armaggedon and bring on the Rapture, but not so much for anything else

c) all for immigration if we can use it to undermine unions in the meat-packing industry, work for sub-standard wages while picking our fruit or taking care of our kids and cleaning the bathroom, but anti-brown people for anything else

d) anti-women because all women are liars; men--white men in particular, but all men in general--are victims; that government should leave people to make decisions about their lives unless it means women making decisions about their lives

e) of the opinion that lowering taxes on the haves and raising taxes on the have-nots is the solution to everything

f) anti-democracy so that when in power pass voter suppression laws like voter ID because they know that many don't have the forms or the time to get the forms in order to vote

g) so irresponsible and ideologically extreme that they attacked the credit of the US and led to the lowering of the US credit rating.

One-half the public now thinks the conservative half of the country is wants us all to suffer in order for them to regain political power.

Well done, conservatives.

(And no, I am not interested in hearing how one of your cults on the right are the 'real' conservatives and the rest are a bunch of heretics. When the lust for power leads you to sell your soul to get power, it is called accessory before the fact.)

Conservative "Greed is Good" types care more about themselves than they do the country. Sad, very sad, but true.

It is time to end the era of power politics.

Most of us here on the board live in Korea and from 'time to time' Very Happy have problems with Koreans being too group oriented. (About every 23 1/2 minutes)

No society is 100% individualistic or group-centered. Everyone is somewhere on the continuum. In the right situation, my students will express aggravation at the demands of a society that values the group over the individual.

Our society has gone to an extreme of valuing the individual over the group. The pendulum must swing back. For us, the 'balance' will always be more on the individual side, which as a product of that system I agree with, but this nonsense of me, me, me is insane. The mechanism for that that I see is this issue of inequality. One glaring demonstration of the horror of the other view is Rand Paul's defense of property rights over human rights. Monomania is not healthy.

Quick! Ruin the economy so Obama can't ruin the economy! Surely people will vote for us. Awesome plan. Great job.

Rather than clog the forum wtih new post, I am putting this hear as its related. My apologies to the OP if it appears as a hijack. Its not intended to be, only to supplement the post.

I thought this was refreshing. I'd also combine this with specific, targeted cuts in spendng.
