To be honest, I haven't searched every post in every topic on the board for the answer to this, but I am just curious.

Why are there a sizeable amount of schools in Korea searching just for female teachers? Is it a cultural aspect or have the schools just had better success with female teachers? Can anyone tell me?

Thanks!

I don't have the stats on it, but I think that first up there are more males teaching esl in korea so we aren't as abundant.

Second in the schools the korean teaching staff seems to be very female dominated and the owners for whatever reason don't want a co-ed workplace (last school).

Also I think that there is a preception that guys tend to go out partying more than girls.... so if you were part of a married couple then things become different.

These are just my preceptions of why.. I don't agree with the reasoning behind it but I don't make the rules.

There is also a feeling that women do better in teaching kindergarten.

I believe what everyone before said is correct, mostly because Korean believe that female will be much better with the younger kids. So they look for females and there are much less female teachers out there. For some schools with shared housing they always do their best to have same sex roommates.

My last school had a virtually all-female staff. The general manager was hitting on me left and right -- jokingly obvious.

Perhaps the women are afraid of us foreign men stealing their hearts and *ahem* taking them for a ride?

Ok... enough macho male response...

The reason is because, honestly, girls do fit into the Kindy scheme better in most instances. They also are more "pliable" when it comes to screwing over for hours, pay, etc. than most guys, who might blow up and make a scene.

Also, korean mothers are less intimidated and more interested in a blonde female than they are with a tall foreign man.

On the other hand, they're generally less sexually attracted to foreign females than males, I'd say.

And as some mothers and schools would have you believe, men that are here are peadophiles and therefore aren't to be trusted with children of any age.

I have experienced those comments and it kind of makes me mad when I hear it.

It is my understanding that most Korean people think that women are more reliable and patient with kids. Also, teaching has been a women's profession for many many years.

Too bad that you can't understand this article.... Sad This article explains that women dominate the teaching in Korea. To balance between the numbers of men and women teachers, school districts are pressured to hire male teachers; at least 30% of all new hires should be males. It is sorta like affirmative action. This article mainly talks about public schools, and I am sure it is worse in hagwons because of the job stability and pay scale. I hope my brief nutshell explanation satisfies you.
