Ken Russell, the British director whose daring and sometimes outrageous films often tested the patience of audiences and critics, has died at age 84.

Russell died in a hospital on Sunday following a series of strokes, his son Alex Verney-Elliott said Monday.

By my count, I've only seen five of his films(though that number becomes more impressive if we restrict the overall sample to theatrical releases, of which he had relatively few). Altered States I suppose was my favorite. He did the freaky psychedelic religious trip better than almost anyone.

Other than that, Lair Of The White Worm was pretty good(more trippy religious stuff, lots of Catholic imagery), and Salome's Last Dance was enjoyable enough, but not really my cup of tea. We watched Women In Love in my English Literature class at university, and all I remember is Glenda Jackson singing "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" while a horse goes berzerk. That Crimes Of Passion thing with Anthony Perkins was even more forgettable.

I do regret that I've never seen more than a few seconds of Tommy. The Devils sounded interesting as well.

I was a little disappointed with Tommy. The album was better. But then most adaptations are not as good as the original.

I did like Women in Love. Lots of sublimated sexuality. The scene I remember is Alan Bates and Oliver Reed wrestling nude. That was pretty much unheard of in those days.

I can't say I was a fan, but the man tried to do original stuff. Can't fault that.
