...well, almost no one. They had to wait after repeated tries till a couple bystanders did. What kind of society do we live in when we are at the point no one is willing to help? If nothing else call 911 or something.

I'm pretty sure it is a crime to make a false report to 911. The report is just another prime time news appeal to stranger hysteria and a foreseen consequence of the child sex abuse witchhunt which continues apace. Such stranger abductions are so exceedingly rare that sociologically, they do not even hit the radar. As your own link points out, 99% of child abductions are by family, not strangers.

It is not really hard to understand people, especially men, not responding. They have been terrorized into inaction. Is it any wonder? As the Wall Street Journal published in Eek! A Male!:

Quote:
Last week, the lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, Timothy Murray, noticed smoke coming out of a minivan in his hometown of Worcester. He raced over and pulled out two small children, moments before the van's tire exploded into flames. At which point, according to the AP account, the kids' grandmother, who had been driving, nearly punched our hero in the face.
...
And that's not the worst. In England in 2006, BBC News reported the story of a bricklayer who spotted a toddler at the side of the road. As he later testified at a hearing, he didn't stop to help for fear he'd be accused of trying to abduct her. You know: A man driving around with a little girl in his car? She ended up at a pond and drowned.

Hard call, I'd walk by too thinking he's a step-dad or something.

I don't know if I could live with myself if I found out later it was an actual abduction. As for not making a 911 distress call because its illegal to make false calls, how is that a false call? If you have no idea its staged, how is it false? I think its a bit of a cop out. Also, the girl is yelling you're not my daddy.

In Korea I'd dismiss it, in America with all the nutjobs running around, I wouldn't.

I didn't watch it, so I don't know the specifics, but I'm kind of appalled that they faked a child abduction in the first place.

^ Exactly. Pure hysteria-mongering, and prime time news is the biggest culprit. It is disgusting how they want to foster this idea that we all should all be spying on our neighbors, musing about what evil they may be engaging in.

It looked like a kid throwing a tantrum, to me. I most likely wouldn't have done anything.

would of been a lot more interesting to see what happens if they changed the ethnic background of the child abductor. Would it be a different result if the child abductor was black? Hispanic? Asian?

Boyfriend beats girlfriend. What would you do ?

I doubt this is what would happen in real life.

It was staged to show that people won't help your child if some one was trying to take them.
Child having a tantrum...yelling 'You're not my father, leave me alone'. Hmmm...yeah, tantrum. Interesting thing is its a couple of black guys who are the only ones who "helped" the kid.

Except that it doesn't show that. It is not a real scenario, and even if it were, kids say stuff like that all the time to stepparents, and even at times to biological parents.

Forcible abductions of children are extremely rare, and rare practically to the point of non-existence when done in plain view of others. Can you link us to a single real such case?

That'd probably have been my reaction too. "You're not my dad" to my ears = bratty child being disrespectful to a step parent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stranger_danger

" in the US, about 800,000 children are reported at least temporarily missing every year, yet only 115 "become victims of what is viewed as classic stranger abductions".[2] In situations where the child is in danger for other reasons, avoiding strangers (who might help) could in fact be dangerous itself, such as in the case of an 11-year-old Boy Scout who avoided rescue searchers because he feared they might want to 'steal him'."

So you're saying the average person on the street knows this? Are you also implying that everyone or even the majority of the ones who did not help knew this as well?
