I've been here long enough to know that it's not my home country and not to expect too much, and I've learned how to deal with the everyday difficulties and irritations, but today I am really freakin hating the place. Liars and cheats are infuriating no matter what language they happen to speak. |

I know how you feel. I'll have a great few months, and then a day like you're describing happens. Kind of makes me question everything. |

Good times in Korea - Most things ouside of work.
Bad times in Korea - Most, or 50% of things inside work (been here 7 years and the one I have at the moment is the only one not like this.) |

The past year has been one of the worst.
Conditions have worsened and employers have too many options and too much power now compared to a couple years back. |

I never would have lasted so long without my respectable job bubble. Every time I go outside my job bubble, I regret it. I find people are generally much nicer when they know what my job is. Often the same people who were being kind of jerky before they found out I'm not a hooker or hagwon teacher or whatever they'd been assuming about me. Because so what if I was? The relative standing of my job shouldn't make such a difference in how I'm treated. I hate being reminded of this. It feels so fake and dirty. |

I just hate that it's so cold.
This last year has been wonderful, and I don't
even like Korea that much. |

Maybe lose the Christianity? Korea is like Christianity on steroids, as a long ago poser opined. Well, actually, he was talking about something else on steroids, but same, same ...
If you don't like liars and cheats, then don't head for China. You will find them in abundance in China. You might just want to head home (wherever that is). There, in North America or elsewhere, you will still find them as well.
It exists in every part of the world. Some places are worse than others. But everywhere to be sure. |

Heh heh, a Chinese friend said the last person he'd ever trust in business was another Chinese. |

I'm leaving this hellhole country tomorrow! I hate this place and hope the economy crashes and burns worse than 1997. Koreans are too full of themselves and uppity, a big economic depression here will give the bitch slap of reality they need, just like in 1997!
Up yours, Korea! |

If it weren't for some significant Christians in my life, I would have left this place a long time ago. It's a great place to grow spiritually and a large part of that has to do with learning to deal with difficulties and the weird expectations that we find within ourselves and the other people here.
Having said that, I've decided to head home for awhile. I'm not worried or anxious about finding a job or anything like that because I know that God has a plan. I might not know what it is just yet, but I know that it's going to be pretty great. |

I had a bad(ish) afternoon yesterday.
I went to a restaurant and ordered a fish dinner the other day. The adjuma shooed me away and said 'NO SANDWICHHEEE YOGI! nO SANDWICHEE, NO BURGAH.'
I explained in korean that I wanted the makrel set menu with rice and miyuk guk.
She started laughing and showed me a picture menu. I replied again that I understood and knew what I wanted and then ordered it again.
She kept double checking that that is what I wanted and I got so pissed that I started muttering out loud enough for people to hear
"Look mofo, I don't want a damned sandwich ffs, I want ___________. I told you in Korean already, just cook it you moron.' In English...'
I know it was childish, but even after 7 years here and KNOWING why they act like they do and she didn't mean to insult me, it still makes me fume at times.
She repeated the meal once more to check and I wacved her away and said ' ne, hangul mal aliyo.'
Then when I'd eaten she and her friends started pissing themselves laughing and screaming out 'ALIYO, ALIYO HA HA ALIYO!' In a ridiculous voice.
Man....
Well they just lost a repeat customer who would've spent at least man won a week there and I'll now be eating at a place up the street that has the same meal for 1.5k more (better quality anyway.)
I know an old adjuma in that situation don't mean to consciously insult us, it's just that their culture doesn't teach them how to interact with us or that we even have feelings etc, I truly believe that because otherwise she should've been scared about the possible recriminations of insulting a fully grown man like that in public - but the fact is it probably never even occured in her mind that she was doing anything rude.
But yeah I was kind of livid after a while and walked out muttering to anyone in earshot 'no point bothering learning the sodding language when they wont take you speaking it seriously anyway.' |
