Does anyone know a water delivery service (to Guro-gu) in English? Alternatively, how does one usually set up water delivery? Can I mime it or show a note in Korean to the guy at the front desk at my officetel?
My school sort deals primarily with F2s who don't need this info and has no interest in helping me (an E2) with this stuff. I am not complaining, but any advice would be most helpful. I just don't have enough Korean and my co-teacher (there is only one) is stressed up to her eyeballs right now and I feel guilty asking.
Muchas gracias.
P.S. I also want to buy a couch, but have no idea how to have it transported without spending more that I would like to spend on the couch. |

You could just get a brita filter. Buy one that comes with a ton of catridges, get someone from home to ship it over. That's what I used. |

The price of bulky items generally includes delivery. |

I don't have regular delivery, but I order two or three cases every so often on Gmarket. It's almost free: a case of 12 two liters is like 6000, and shipping is free.
They also have a wide selection of couches, and delivery fees are quite cheap. |

Did you solve your water delivery question?
If the desk guy at your officetel cant help you, just keep your eyes open for a nearby water supply shop (theres bound to be one in your neighborhood). Pretty basic to indicate you'd like water delivered. Have your address written down.
Once they've delivered once, its just a case of phoning up & saying your name. They'll figure it out from there.
Heres a typical scenario. You'll need a dispenser. If you'll be getting a minimum of 3 jugs (18.9 liters each) per month (@ w5000 each), they'll provide the machine for free. If not, you can rent to buy (w5000 a month) or purchase it outright (maybe w120000). A handpump, which they can also sell you, is a cheaper alternative, but the hot/cold dispenser is a convenient unit.
Best luck. |

Thanks all for your advice. I have since checked out gmarket for furniture (!!!). If I can't get a couch, I can at least get an inflatable chair that looks like a giant soccer ball, and/or a stool that is also a giant, terrified-looking cat.
My main goal with water delivery, in addition to convenience, is to not use roughly seventeen thousand plastic water bottles over the next year. So, fingers crossed that I run into the water place when I next scour a sector of my new 'hood.
Thanks! |

I've got home delivery in Bucheon, wonmi gu - right next to guro-gu. Diamond Water is the company - it's a subsidiary of CocaCola (or so says the bottles). The big jugs are 5000 won per jug, and the hand pump was 20k i believe, maybe 18? Anyway, it's simple enough. I leave the empties outside my door with 5000 won for every jug I want and every Friday, they stop by. Guy above me brews beer, so they lug a couple hundred liters a time up to his place....
Anyway, as far as the language goes, man up! Get a dictionary, write down what you think you'll need, and then give them a call. I'm sure if you can tell them you're a foreigner and you can't speak Korean, they'll probably have SOMEONE around the office who can speak enough words to tell you what to do.
As far as couches go, GMarket. Bought one a few months back for about 100k including shipping.
If you want the Diamond Water number, PM me and I'll find it when I go home. |

nathanrutledge,
I would love the number for that water company! I can't PM you because I don't have enough posts. Could you possibly email me at yahaayah at hotmail.com?
Thanks everyone for the specific info. I shall soon be hydrated. |
