I'm curious what people think the highest income a top-end teacher could make working in the Korean English industry. I've been in Korea for five years, since right after I graduated college, and have been teaching in test-prep hagwons in Daechi for a while now. I have also written several textbooks about standardized English texts and have taught at the top foreign language high school in Korea. While my salary now is good, I want to know what my prospects are for the future. How much of a pay raise should I ask for the next contract? How much money could I realistically make if I stay in this line of work for another three, five, or even 10 years? In short, what is the highest income for a top teacher?
Any insight would be appreciated. |
What is your current Gross Salary?
What is your current Net Salary?
Most schools will limit pay raises to 100,000 WON per year.
I will take an off-the-wall guess and say you are looking at a 100,000 WON increase, on average, per year at best.
Many starting salaries aren't much more than they were 5 years ago, some the same, and some even less. However, considering how much experience you have, you have the potential to continue to make more money if the market will support it.
The sky is the limit. On the other hand, .... |

Based on what I know of test prep joints and foreign language schools, I'm going to assume the OP has already broken through the 100,000 won ceiling. |

Depends on how much you are willing to work.
A standard job in Korea? 6-9 hours a day and you would probably max out somewhere in the higher 2s or lower 3s. You could be making that at test prep schools, good unis or teaching toeic. International school pay is crap and the hours suck, the only good reason to work for one is if you have school aged children who can attend for free.
However, most of those jobs are going to pale in comparison to someone who works a short shift after-school position (4-6 hours a day) and works a ton of privates or someone who owns their own small academy.
As far as I know of, the highest paid positions to be had in Korea at one job are in teaching toeic. Some of the chains pay per student and I have a few acquiesces that make 10+ mil a month on a regular month and can pull 25-30 during vacation months. However, they work 14 hours a day. |

I've heard stories (never met any of them) of superstar teachers (always Korean) who make a million dollars in a year.
How much do you think David Cho makes every year? I bet it is more than most people can count...
In Korea, teaching is a business - you can make as much as you can. |

I know Poly pays their teachers really well, because they work LONG hours. However, it is right if you're willing to work more than 10 hours a day, then you can get the high 2 million KRW range to the lower 3 million KRW range. If you have a master's, then you can make even more money. You can make a little more with a Ph. D. If you teach in the colleges and universities here in Korea, then you can almost have silver platter. However, Korea is considering cutting EPIK and other public school programs.
I could be wrong. |

Lecturers at the univ. level usually take a side job for maybe 6 hrs a week for hourly pay and make 4-5 million per month.
Pretty much the same as HUFS is paying their top dogs, but without the responsibility of publishing. Their current ad tops out at 4.65 for a full professor (and I doubt there are many foreigners who get hired as that).
Sad. |

Um...I work at a hakwon, and our STARTING salary is 2.9 million a month, for 23 class-hours a week -- and yeah, they advertise on Dave's. Folks that re-sign get raises. OT is available, and is paid at 30k an hour...if you are working THAT hard, there are places that would pay a lot more for it.... |

For an F class visa one might make 50,000 an hour for as many hours as one can find a week. That's just regular work, some manage to pull more in by their own contacts or starting a business.
For an E2 like yourself I'm guessing that you are already maxed out or close to in terms of return for your time. You need to look at ways to get paid in ways not directly connected to the hours you put in to get more.
Another option is to apply for the F2-99 and then F5 visa status. That might open up some options for you. |

But at 3 mil it's easy to top that up even with your run of the mil 30k textbook classes.

Yup. HuFS does pay a nice 8 mill per published work, but you dont have to be a PhD to do that. |

The very very top test prep stars earn in the ballpark of $1,000,000. I personally know several people who earn $400k+. The sky is the limit if your reputation is good enough to produce enormous demand. |
