Me and my partner are leaving our current school and want to go for another job we have seen, due to a variety of reasons. My question is how should we go about this?
We've applied for the new job and they sound like they are interested, but they have asked for a reference, and my boss is not the nicest of people. I don't think any good can come of approaching her for a reference. Which begs the question, do we leave notice and ask for a reference (which we probably won't get)? If we attempt to leave notice we could possibly get fired on the spot. We haven't been there more than 3 months.
Should I simply explain my situation to the potential new employer or does it make me sound like a bad employee? We're really not sure what to do on this and we would be grateful for any advice. |

Expecting your director to give you a good reference after only working there for 3 months, when you promised to work there for an entire year, is totally unreasonable on your behalf. Of course she won't give you a good reference.
If you need a reference, ask a previous employer that you've worked with for a while. Or a professor if this is your first job.
Furthermore, your main issue is not a reference letter, it is a Letter of Release. You will need this to transfer your visa to the new school. And good luck getting that. Your boss is not required to do that and when you ask her, expect her to flip out. Especially if she is losing two teachers. (I never did understand why schools want to hire couples. I guess they save on housing, but it is a major risk.) If you can't get a release letter you will have to do a visa run to Japan. You might need new documents too.
Why do you want to change schools? Bad location? Director is treating you poorly? |
