Cool.
I've got a question.
Dear Zoo,
Are these specifically questions regarding counseling (in reference to the thread about lowest-paying degrees) or are you accepting general questions?
Many thanks,
Thirty-Eight
P.s. I enjoy ham. |

Dear 38, first of all, I know it takes guts to reach out for help and I applaud you for that. I will field any questions one may have. Relationship problems? Just ask. What to do in a certain situation? Ask.
At a crossroads in your life and need help? That's what I'm here for. Do not waste an opportunity of a lifetime. I've only got three months left.
And when I'm gone, this free to Dave's users counseling service will be gone.
Finally, thirty eight, don't dismiss your enjoyment of ham as a trivial matter. Perhaps you associate ham with a special time in your life and your time in Korea has deprived you of this comfort food.
My advice is to not cheat yourself out of this indulgence and go ahead and buy the most expensive ham you can find.
I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Zoo,
That is excellent advice. My love of ham is but one of my many food loves. I enjoy sea food even more.
Alas, I'm not in Korea -- yet. I should have left last year, but I was a broke college graduate who was running red with each passing day (I had been broke with very little employment for months prior). So I delayed...
And made pretty good money in manufacturing I stuck around at that job for a while -- too long, it turns out. In January I got an industrial grade ouchie and have been recovering since. Who knows when I'll finally get to Korea? This autumn? I have at least one more forthcoming surgery next winter, assuming everything goes well. Shall I wait until after that? Spring of next year, perhaps? What to do in the meantime? Not going back to the damned factory, I know that. Maybe backpacking? Cycling? I managed to save up a nice egg while working, I could do a nice tour. If only I weren't such a meek person. I don't even like to go to the theatre alone, much less foreign shores
I've actually forgotten the question I was going to ask. But I think all questions are going to eventually originate to: "Where can I get a new pair of *beep* of sufficient clout to stop reading about ESL and traveling and to actually do it." But I reckon we all know the answer to that.... the black market!
Eh well. |

Good Sunday evening entertainment. I'll play!
Question 1 : Do you think aliens have visited / are visiting Earth? If so, why are they visiting?
Question 2: I think it's wasteful and indulgent to shower every day (as long as you go all day without breaking a sweat, as I often do). Am I correct or just lazy?
Scenario: Standing outside 7-11, waiting for a bus. There are 3 older adjussi drinking soju outside. They're already sloshed, looking for a good time, seem nice enough. One invites me to sit down as the other two laugh heartily. He wants me to sit down with them and have a shot. I decline politely with a smile, not because I'm too busy, but because I don't speak Korean and anticipate many awkward moments.
Question 3: Who has bigger issues, me or him?
C'mon man, entertain me! |

In all seriousness 38, keep that hard earned money in your pocket. They'll be ample opportunity for that in Korea. Second, I can't believe one who posts here so frequently isn't already here.
If I had to choose between your work and teaching in Korea for the rest of the my life, I would hope all decisions would be this easy. GO TO KOREA!
You may not want to rule out having medical prodedures done on your vacation to Thailand or the Philippines, depending on whether or not you currently have health insurance. A lot of people are taking medical vacations to third world countries where the medicine is excellent at a fraction of the cost. |

I absolutely agree with you that one not need to shower everyday. In fact, I've heard somewhere that showering too much is bad for your skin; dries it out etc...
Now, the scenario with the three men takes a little more introspection on your part. What was your true motive for not wanting to have a drink with them? Is it truly because you were afraid of awkward silence or something else perhaps?
You see, our service thoughts don't always reflect what's truly going on in our subconscious. Perhaps you were afraid that you might actually have had a good time? Thus this would lead to further commitments in the future on your part. I.e., they may want to take you for drinks next week.
Perhaps you were afraid that you would hurt their feelings if you declinced so you made up the "awkward" excuse as a rationalization for not drinking with them.
It may be that it was as simple as you stated. The important thing is too truly analyze your motive for not drinking with them. |

Thing is, I've been reading this forum for research off and on for a couple of years before I registered. I registered when I had questions to ask as I was planning on leaving... Then I delayed graduating (which financially screwed me hard and gave me nothing in return -- I ended up failing to get the second BA by one course...), that was the first delay coming to Korea. A year later and now I'm stuck for medical and legal reasons. (I was hurt at work, so all of my injury-related expenses are paid by my employer's employee insurance company, and I still have my health and dental insurance benefits.) I would lose all of that if I jumped ship... And until physical therapy (also paid for) is completed (i.e., I regain use), I'm not going anywhere...
But I'm going somewhere. I'm not completely sold on Korea anymore, however... When I first looked at Korea as an option in 2006/07 it was a different ball game than it is today by all accounts. Also, now that I'm not broke (although still very much in debt from school) I have more options...
So I'm hanging out on Dave's keeping the dream alive
... And killing my copious amounts of free time while I count down the days... to when, to what, and to where, though, is anyone's guess |

Due to the ethics of my profession which is guided by the MSW code of ethics I have been informed by my school that it is unethical for me to stop counseling services without any type of referral or resolution. Therefore, good netizens of Dave's, I will be available to help you during these tough times.
I'm half way through my MSW...yeah....

You are half-way through your MSW and you are attempting to give advice. Quoting professional ethics while breaking them is a good call don't you think? You're a hack and the university or matchbox where you are getting your degree should be suspended. Better yet you should be banned from getting a degree anywhere in the world. Don't offer 'professional' advice until you are properly trained. Where are you getting your degree from anyways? |

Dear Dr. Zulethe,
I know this guy and I fear his condition is worsening. Before he claimed that he was coming to teach ESL in Korea to free the oppressed North Koreans. We all had a good laugh and it seemed harmless enough since it helped him forget the reality that he was unemployable back home.
Now he claims that he's preventing assaults from roving bands of racist Koreans, simply by using his manly ability to summon other, lesser waegooks to his side in small restrooms (much like Aquaman controls fish). Suitably impressed, supermodel Korean women are throwing themselves at him. Of course being the stoic superhero, he refuses their carnal advances. Now he's been asking where he can get a mask and a cape so that he can go finish finish off Kim Il Jong and his son and claim their Pleasure Brigade as his own.
My Korean friends insist he just needs more kimchi, but I'm not so sure. What should we do? Help me Dr. Zulethe; you're my only hope! |

In all seriousness, even though you may be joking, you bring up an excellent example of a situation dealing with someone not in touch with reality.
For the average Joe, a good grounding is not only beneficial, but essential for personal growth. We actually had this discussion in a class last week. Is it our duty to project our reality on another? If one is not harming oneself, do we need to ensure that we bend their reality to fit ours?
Reminds me of a story where this guy in a small town somewhere went around calling himself the king of whatever. He did no harm and the rest of the town went along with him and deferred to him as king.
The bottom line is that some individuals i.e., pathological liars have created such an intense, elaborate construction of their lives that if they were to actually be confronted with "reality" they would have a break-down, which I think would be the case with your friend.
For your friend: leave him be and let him enjoy his own reality.
For others, they may need a little tweak to push them in the right direction.
hope this helps

Thanks for the help Z.
Some questions though. There's only one type of guy I know who would so readily reject the advances of attractive women, yet so easily summon male strangers to join him in public restrooms.
Do you think he is trying to tell us something with his stories? Maybe something he wants to reveal to us but doesn't yet have the courage. Is there something we can do to make him feel more comfortable in sharing his secret? |
