I'm trying to decide between working at a hagwon in Beomgye (in Anyang), or a hagwon in Imae (Bundang).

Which would be the better place to live and work?

Bundang hands down.

Bundang is a middle class area with nice green areas, plush apartments and A 20 MINUTE FAST TRAIN INTO GANGNAM, SEOUL.

That train leaves from Jeongja and stops in Pangyo so the trip from Imae would be more like a half hour.

Anyways from what I can tell Bundang kicks Beomgye's ass every day of the week. The only area that might compare to Bundang is Ilsan...maybe. But Ilsan's further away.

Imae.

10 minute walk to the bus stop headed for central Seoul (30 minutes to Itaewan, 40 to Jeongno, 30 to Gangnam).

1 subway stop from Seohyun station or Yatap station - all the shopping you could want with all of your favorite comfort foods (10 minute walk along the main road or 15 minutes along the Tancheon to Seohyun if the weather is nice).

Lots of greenspace within easy walking distance.

Beomgye is decent, and definitely one of the better areas in the suburbs, but Bundang is hands down the best area in the suburbs. The only possible exception to this would be if you're looking to get to Itaewon or Hongdae a lot, as Beomgye is a bit closer and more convenient (only about forty minutes on the train to Itae, a bit longer to Hongdae), and taxis home would be significantly cheaper.

I live next to Beomgye station and I'd say that Imae is the better choice. In general Bundang seems to be ritzy while Anyang is a bit... provincial, for lack of a better word.

What is the best way to get to Itaewon from Imae when buses and trains are running? And how long would it take?

Beomgye isn't bad. Imae is better but lots of people like Beomgye (except maybe the way it is pronounced).

Why is Imae "better"? What do you mean by "lots of people"? Lots of people in general, or foreigners in general?

Walk south to the main east-west road and catch a direct bus (9407 among many). It has about 2 stops between Seohyun (across the main road from Poonglim I-want) and the (10-15 minute walk to the Hamilton Hotel (or 3 minutes by cab if the traffic isn't jammed)) Volvo building and the rest of the trip is on the expressway.

You can also take the subway but it takes a LOT longer (2 line changes (yellow-green-brown).

Generally speaking, Beomgye is a pretty respectable place for both foreigners and Koreans. There's a decent park nearby, and lots of bars and restaurants (including a fair number of foreign places). They're also building a huge mall/department store there that should be finished within the next six months or so, which might spice up the area a bit more. That said, Bundang is just a nicer area to live. Cleaner streets, lots of green space, more upscale, a bit newer, more Western dining options (and good ones, at that). You're talking about the difference between what is probably one of the top ten wealthiest neighborhoods in the country and one that is healthily upper-middle class. I don't think you can really go wrong with either, but I'd probably take Bundang, personally, despite it being a bit farther from most of the places I tend to gravitate towards.
