Hey guys,

I want to visit Thailand for 2 weeks after my contract is up (in March). I wanted to know your suggestions on a cost-effective way to live for 2 weeks. I want to have fun and experience Thai culture, and I don't mind staying in a smaller city (to avoid the expenses of being in Bangkok). Any suggestions? Thanks.

Top (5* )hotels are b3000-6000 per night (anywhere). Decent hotels are b1000 per night. Cheap places are b500.
Street stall or Thai restaurant food is b20-40 per meal.
Western style food is b200-300/plate (plus drinks).
Local buses / vans are cheap (b200 goes a LONG way).

Double those prices if you are headed to the beach, central BKK or a touristy area.

BEST all-round budget is US$1400 for 14 days (you can always bring back anything you don't need). You can do what you want, when you want without worry.

Bottom of the barrel budget is $800 for 2 weeks (but you won't be doing much tourist stuff).

Add more if you like drinking or plan to indulge in a gik.

Just so you know, March, April, May are the "Hot" season in Thailand, as in really, really hot from the moment the sun is over the horizon.
I'd recommend the beaches at that time, find a nice spot and veg out (traveling around is going to be, well, hot). Start in Koh Pha Ngan and move on to Samui if Pha Ngan is too quiet. (avoid Hat Rin beach on Pha Ngan, crowded).
For march, I'd go somewhere with a "Spring", maybe Yangshuo, China. Cheap and Pretty and cooler temps.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I hear you can rent a little condo for farily cheap. Do you know anything about that? Also, how about Phuket? Is it too "touristy", and thus, overpriced?

I recommend Ao Nang beach in Krabi. You can enjoy the beach there while being away from all the noise and hustle bustle. I was there in May 2009 and got a room at the Best Western hotel there for 1,000 baht per night (after I prepaid five nights in advance). It has a pool and breakfast included and is a very nice hotel.

If you go in low season, many places will be closed but enough places that give a 20% discount for low season are around to keep you busy. I personally enjoyed Krabi more than Koh Samui or Phuket.

Condo's can be rented from the Craigslist for Thailand. Usually have to be there at least a month though.
Krabi sounds nice.
All the places mentioned so far are rather "touristy". Phuket is just expensive, highly-developed, and lacking charm.

Best place in Thailand is Koh Phangan. But don't go to Had Rim, go to the West northern coast. Bottle beach is pretty cool, but like Haad Salad, Haad Yai, those ones... amazing.

If you don't want to stay at Bangkok, you can stay at Phuket. It is also a nice place. Several cheap but luxurious hotels in Phuket are;

Baan Sukhothai hotel,
Tony resort,
Patong bay garden resort and many more. You can check this place if you want.

Appartamenti in Affitto in Italia.

I'd do a week in Bangkok and a week on an island if I were you.

Any serious traveler missis out on bangkok to their detriment.

It has such a remarkable feeling to it and so much to see and do that will blow you awy and is CHEAPER than the islands anyay.

A week in Bangkok and a week on Koh Samui would be a great intro to Thailand.

Man everytime I post in one of these threads, I still feel jealous after all these years... even though I'm going to Shanghai for vacation and looking forward to it.

For Bangkok, stay at The Atlanta. It's an inexpensive time honoured Hotel or Guest House. The restaurant there is absolutely delicious. It's on Sukhumvit Soi 2, centrally located. It has a swimming pool with gardens and Spartan rooms (although very nice) with excellent mattresses and linen sheets. You should email them and reserve a room if you are arriving late in the day. Arriving in the morning you can probably go there and book a room. Cost is $16 dollars for a comfortable room with a large powerful overhead fan.

Another thing either on Christmas day or Christmas eve (I don't remember which) they have a delicious free Christmas Banquet for the guests with an English and German Christmas Menu.

The only small city to stay in is Chiang Mai. The other small cities you probably would find extremely boring.

I don't know what your budget is, but if you really want to live cheap you need to stay at Khao San or in Banglampoo. Peachy Guest House is quite nice, the rooms are spacy and an aircon room costs $6.50 per night. They have a nice garden restaurant that opens at night. You would have to get used to the hard beds.

For Chiang Mai, the dorm at The Korea House is quite nice and comfortable, beds are hard though, and they have a Korean restaurant that is inexpensive. Dorm rooms are $3.50 a night. They do laundry and stuff cheaply enough. You can catch buses from the Korea House, they're actually nicer than the ones at the Bus terminals, cheaper and more convenient.

Don't. don't exchange won to baht.

Exchange won to US dollars while you are in Korea.
Exchange your dollars to Baht when you get to the Land of Smiles.

Do NOT TAKE WON OUT OF KOREA. It amounts to little more than junk paper after you leave ICN.

You can buy a few thousand baht from the exchange in ICN to last until you get to a bank or currency exchange in Thailand.

Bring nice, new, crisp $100 notes for the best exchange rate.
(smaller notes get hit with a 1-2 baht per dollar worse exchange rate).

If you have an American bank account with a debit card that has Visa on it, just wire your Won into that account. Thailand is full of ATM's on every corner that you can get money out of easily with a debit card with Visa.
