Just want to give those of you who work in public schools a heads up I didn't have (my head was obviously down on the matter).
In a state-run institution, you are not immune to pay issues. I will not name names or even provinces, but I found to my discontent I still hadn't been paid for the month of November. It's December now of course.
The "people with the money"/HR or whatever they're calling themselves now, apparently paid my wages into the former FT's account. Funny that, seeing as they had no problems paying into my account prior to this month. It could be some Korean cultural thing whereby they have the goodness of heart to confirm every month who they're paying. But, I find these "cultural" glitches generally go against foreigners, and work out quite favorably for Koreans. I wouldn't want to let the little hamster wheel in my head start tumbling too much as it may well be a perfectly ordinary, innocent sweet little mistake, but I think it's still better to always assume things like this can happen and to be vigilant.
*just now* A fellow worker just walked in and confirmed that they did indeed pay the "wrong" guy. Look, that's just unacceptable to me. It's not good enough that one foreign teacher could suddenly be up 21/2 odd million and think he has a surplus of cash and go on a spending spree, and another guy to be down the same amount and feeling deep down that maybe he overspent. The disgusting thing is the moustached woman in the HR room at first tried to assert that I had been paid. She didn't know my name. How convenient - let's put that one down to Korean culture too.
Not good enough!
Edit: I'll remove this thread soon, as I have cooled down. |

That's incompetence. Nothing cultural about that. To call it a cultural difference would be "the soft bigotry of low expectations." |

I agree. and inflation is theft.
*EDIT* and no talk of compensating the other guy for having to go to the bank and remove the money he may have already decided to spend! The HR people gave me some candy! Hilarious. But I wasn't laughing. It's funny how many times in this country to smile and nod to a reply of (heheh the foreigners are so easy - they accept candy) Poor things. I'm not that easy! |

It's happened a couple of times. I just have a little chat with 'em and straighten things out. It's not worth getting bent out of shape over IMO. If it were deliberate or they weren't paying you then that's a battle worth fighting. |

See, the other guy shouldn't have a single problem with "overspending." I know exactly how much money I have in my account. I know what I get paid. I know when I get paid. Random money that shows up in my account is not there to be spent - it's their to be inquired at the bank about! Some idiot spends money that's in his account that isn't his, it's HIS fault.
Did you take the candy? |
