|
|
We want to get the word out about a NZ teacher hospitalized in Busan. He has a rare blood type, 0 negative, and needs a liver transplant to survive. His family cannot afford the 40 to 50 million won estimated cost of the operation. Native Speaking English Teachers here in Miryang, SK, along with many Korean friends are trying to raise the necessary funds. His brother arrived last night from NZ and is a potential donor. He is going to the hospital this morning to speak with the doctors and be tested for donor suitability. The facebook page is here.

Sorry to hear about his illness.
Wouldn't it be better for him to fly back to NZ than staying here? |

If he could fly, yes, that would be a good solution. But he's now in the ICU, and unable to fly. |

yes he does need blood. He's at Busan University Hospital in Yangsan. Perhaps you could call the NZ Embassy in Seoul. They are aware of the situation. |

What a terribly sad story. What happened to him? Why does he need a liver transplant? |

I called and spoke with a doctor at Pusan National University Hospital Yangsan regarding blood donations. He recommended waiting until a surgery date was set to donate blood.
Once a date is set, I will re-post on how to donate blood to ensure that it gets to him directly. The doctor told me that it's a fairly easy process to get the blood to him. It's just a matter of telling the hospital (anywhere in Korea) that you are donating this blood to a specific person.
Again, once a date has been set, I'll post all the information that you might need. |

Seoulman, I'm not sure how to answer that. Alcohol certainly had a role in it. He was quite recently a healthy individual, hiking, jogging, swimming, lifting weights at the gym. He is not a partier, nor does he hang out in bars, but he does/did drink and it seems to have caught up with him. But I'm not a doctor, so I can't give a definate answer to that. |

That doesn't inspire much sympathy i'm afraid. Might be difficult getting money for him. Good luck though. |

Let this be a warning to those that like to drink to get drunk. Your liver doesn't let your body know that that you're over working it until you've hit the point of no return. So drink moderately to enjoy, but not to get drunk and wasted. |

The Rugby World Cup must have been too much for his liver. Always drink in moderation! |

If it was due to drinking, he probably won't get it. Aren't you supposed to be off alcohol for like 6 months at least? |

He has been off alcohol for more than 6 months. That is one of the stipulations for being on the transplant list. |

Then he had plenty of time to fly back to NZ. |
