I am currently working in a Hogwan, my contract officially finishes on Oct 22nd (I have an E2 A.R.C which runs out on this date too) I have been offered a job at a Uni and have accepted, it`s starting date Sept 1st. I have my letter of release signed by my current employer and dated August 20th finishing date. I hope to do my visa trip between August 20th and September 1st. I would really appreciate someone who has done this or is in the know leeting me know if this all sounds okay...I`m a little worrier when it comes to dates..I`d really appreciate a response!
Cheers! Laughing [size=18]

There is no question. Your finishing date is your finishing date on your Letter of Release and in theory you're released at that time. However, it isn't official until your current employer contacts Immigration to cancel your working contract. I can speak from experience that Immigration isn't happy on issuing a new Visa Issuance Form (Blue Paper) until the records show your contract has been canceled with them (with or without a LOR in-hand).

Otherwise the dates are all fine, there shouldn't be a question here.

Though also keep in mind that in the fine-keeping of the letter of the law is that you can't accept a job while you work at another ... SPECIFICALLY you can't legally sign a contract for a new job while you have a contract with your current school. I know people will argue with me on this fact, as occurs with every posting here, but it's true.

On a related topic - when should you go to immigration with your director to file your letter of release? Say I've given two months notice. Do I go to immigration with the letter of release now, or later?

You would go later, say within 2 weeks. Because, what happens is that when you actually go to immigration to do the cancellation of your contract and visa you then issued a 2 week exit order from immigration and thus have 2 weeks to leave the country; if you go to cancel now you won't be issued a 2 month order, but a 2 week order and have to leave. So you wait

Hello again, Thankyou for your words snuffleugulus!
Just a quick query, I have still to sign with the Uni, "its a promise though" he keeps telling me, he wants me to send him all paperwork including LOR before I sign with him, so I just took for granted that he would take it from here, as nobody has mentioned that I will have to go with my director to the local office to cancel current contract...I thought , I am released on August 20th therefore I am no longer bound to her, and then just nip to Japan with everything?

Immigration will issue you a new Visa Issuance form (the blue form) to you when the have the LOR and you have had your contract cancelled with immigration ... if you go with your boss to have them do it all at once, you should be able to have your new form issued then, assuming your new job has done everything they need ... I'd schedule a meeting with your old boss to go to immigration and then later that day go with your new one, or the next day, put them close together. You can't be issued the new forms for a new visa until you're 'legally' cancelled from your current (if that all makes sense)
