I'm in my third year with EPIK (2 years elementary, 1 year high) and came over here with Bachelors in English Lit. and a TEFL certificate. Enjoying life abroad and don't want to return home, so aiming to continue working in the ESL industry for the short/medium term at least.
Given my desire to continue with this line of work it makes sense that I should try to enhance my CV/resume for future possibilities. As a South African citizen I figured doing PGCE through UNISA would be the logical/most affordable way of furthering my education but I'm uncertain of the value of PGCE. I've seen the PGCE compared to CELTA/TEFL/TESOL courses which seems crazy because PGCE is a 1/2 year thing whereas the others are very short.
I thought PGCE would set me up to possibly teach university level in Korea or elsewhere in east Asia or do a short stint in one of the lucrative middle eastern countries where they require you to be a qualified teacher in your home country but now I'm not so sure. Can anyone shed some light on the value of the PGCE in Asia/the middle east? |

If you want to move into a K-12 environment (international schools) globally as something more than an EFL teacher (English language arts?) then PCGE is the way to go.
If you want to move into the tertiary sector (university lecturer) then an MATESOL / MA Applied Linguistics / MA English Lit / etc. is the route to take.
If you want to move into an E1 (visiting professor) position (globally) then you need to work toward your ABD/PhD or a related MA with related experience, publications and workshop/seminar presentations.

Want to spend your future working in language academies (teacher to DOS) then CELTA/DELTA are the way to go.
