When I restarted working in Korea this year I was given a cell phone and then discovered some international calling cards that seemed to work pretty well. I just pay 10,000K for about a monthly refill at SK.

Tonight, however, went into a Filippino store in Noksapyong and bought a card there. I had bought one there before and the phone rate was pretty decent to call back to the US. The reception was good.

In the course of visiting there I asked the guy in the store about some info on a place in the Philippines. He was friendly and then said give me your phone number, I know a couple of guys who are familiar with the place you're talking about.

I got home and the card I'd bought only had 5 minutes instead of the usual 300 you get. I'm not 100% certain but I wonder if I got ripped off by this guy? The scratch off part was intact on the back of the card?

I'm worried now any calling card I use to that particular 080 number will just get ripped off or be a rip off?

Anyone got this one figured out?

Seems unlikely that it had anything to do with giving the guy your phone number since the card isn't tied to your phone number at all. You can use the card from any phone, right?

That said, it sounds like someone ripped you off. Hard to say if it's the guy at the shop, someone at the phone company, or someone else.

Did you try returning the card to the shop? Calling the company? What did they say?

On the other hand, if it was only 10,000 won it may not even be worth wasting your time trying to get it sorted out. Just don't buy from that shop or that card company anymore.

Skype is cheap and you never have to go into a shop to buy cards.

Thanks for responding.

Yeah, I have been using skype and was enjoying just dialing up wherever on my cell. I hate talking into my netbook "mic" after a bit. Next time I'm back in the neighborhood, I'll swing by the little store and mention I got ripped - maybe they can check it but I would doubt it. Definately not going to use that company's card again.

One of best reasons for the card was I could make longer calls cheaply within Korea....guess I can go that route via skype as long as I'm home.
