Is a full endoscopy needed to check for rectal cancer, or is there an easier way? We get the choice of doing this for free through our school physical, and I have never done it. But I want to check that area for said cancer. The test sounds..... awful... |

There are specialized clinics that do endocsopys. One of my student's parents did it and her English was pretty good. You could probably ask a co-teacher to help you out with this. |

In this situation, I would think that the last person on earth you would ask for help from, would be your Korean co-teacher. Bummer! |

Are you sure about what they are offering? I've had the upper endoscopy provided by my Uni, but never the lower (colonoscopy). Korean medicine is geared toward the early detection of esophageal cancer rather than colon cancer.
Heavy smoking + heavy drinking = Increased risk of esophageal cancer. (Koreans)
Diets high in cholesterol and red meat = Increased risk of colon cancer. (Westerners)
Are you sure you need a colonoscopy? I mean if you're not at risk, it's pretty invasive. Possible complications include colon/intestinal tearing. Yikes!
Purpose
A colonoscopy is generally recommended when the patient complains of rectal bleeding or has a change in bowel habits or other unexplained abdominal symptoms. The test is frequently used to test for colorectal cancer, especially when polyps or tumor-like growths have been detected using the barium enema and other diagnostic tests. Polyps can be removed through the colonoscope and samples of tissue (biopsies) can be taken to test for the presence of cancerous cells.
The test also enables the physician to check for bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. It is a necessary tool in monitoring patients who have a past history of polyps or colon cancer. It also may be used as a screening tool for people at high risk of developing colon cancer, such as those with a strong family history of the disease.

I've recently researched this due to a family member just having polyps removed. That being said, you can get a colonoscopy done for as little as 100-150,000 won and if they find any polyps, they will remove them immediately.
This procedure costs well over $2,000 in the USA. |

Barium is used for x-rays of your digestive tract. I don't know how often they use that, it's old medicine. They have other procedures that I think are more effective. I think endoscopies and colonoscopies have taken away from a lot of Barium x-rays. Also they take your blood and make it radioactive, re-administer it and look for bleeding using x-rays. Another thing they have is a small camera that passes through your small intestine taking pictures as it moves along. They use endoscopies to check for GERD or ulcers or cancer in the esophagus, stomach or duedonum. Colonoscopies are for the bowel and large intestine.
I have had them without anesthesia and thier not pleasant, but thier tolerable. |

I've had some intestinal/colon problems in the past and my doctor is Kang Yoon Sik from Joyfull Hospital (기쁨병원) in Gangnam, specifically Dogok-dong. Dr. Kang speaks fluent English and studied/worked in hospitals in the US/UK. He's very nice, has a great sense of humor, and is the only guy I've ever paid to stick his finger up my ass. I actually had an operation done by him and my overnight experience at the hospital was positive. There's also an OBGYN and an internal medicine dept. at the hospital, but I have only been to that one dept.
Please read the testimonials. They are amazing for so many reasons.

Yeah, I couldn't help myself when the opportunity presented itself. I was hoping someone would catch it. |

OP, I hope you can get this all worked out, and that all your tests come back clear. Based on personal experience, my advice would be:
Do not do a colonsoscopy at SHUH, and if you do one, be asleep for it. At SNUH, they did not tell me what kind they would be doing, I was awake, it was extremely painful, and I was left with lingering pain for months at the spot where the doctor rushed. They line people up for this procedure like they are cattle and rush them through as quickly as possible to make as much money as possible. When it is all said and done, they may have absolutely no advice for you whatsoever! |
