This may be a stupid question. How common is piracy in Korea? Is it similar to US with torrenting and everything? Are people in Korea more or less likely to get caught doing this? How do people in Korea do this safely?
Thanks! |

Korea is the "Mecca" of internet piracy. The internet is quick and no concern from the government. Although they say they are "cracking down" I have only heard of one person on the news being caught (year or two ago).
They use torrents mostly but go through Korean sites that you have to register for. I don't think foreigners can (use their Korean ID #'s). Not exactly sure as all the foreign sites work here (Demonoid, Pirate's Bay, etc) and I download from them instead.
If you want an illegal copy of a movie and don't want to download, there are people that sell them outside of the subway stops, in plain sight of police officers, with their wares spread out on tables. |

The FBI with the assistance of INTERPOL will place you on the 10-most wanted list, track you down with the tenacity of a bloodhound, arrest you and extradite you to the US for criminal charges of piracy but they will let everyone else download, burn and sell the latest Hollywood blockbusters with impunity.
Seriously, 20TB and 10 years later... no worry mate.

I've had three email warnings forwarded to me by my Korean ISP which were sent by the legal representatives of big media corporations in the US...........in each case it was for downloading a recently released blockbuster-type movie.
So although the chance of actual prosecution might be very slight, the Korean downloading scene is not totally unpoliced. |
