SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Koreans are the least sexually active among people in 13 countries surveyed in an international online poll, a global pharmaceutical company said Monday.
Eli Lilly and Co.'s Seoul office said Korean couples over 34 have sex an average of 1.04 times a week, citing the survey based on data collected from 12,063 people worldwide including 1,005 South Koreans.
South Korea was the only Asian country on the list that was otherwise made up of European and North American countries.
Portuguese and Mexicans were the most sexually active, with couples there engaging in sexual intercourse 2.05 times and 2.03 times per week, respectively. The countries were followed by Romania, Austria and Belgium that ranked in the top five.
The survey also showed low frequency rates in Finland and Denmark where the results stood at 1.21 times and 1.10 times on average per week.
The U.S.-based pharmaceutical company, in addition, said 48 percent of Koreans experienced being rejected by their partners, which is much higher than the 33 average for all countries checked.
Reflecting this, Eli Lilly said 44 percent of South Koreans said they gave excuses, such as fatigue and exhaustion, to avoid sexual relations with their partners.
The latest findings, meanwhile, said only 8 percent of Koreans polled said they sought medical advice or treatment for sex-related problems, the lowest number among the countries surveyed.

Well let's see. Husbands are up at 6am, on the train or bus for a solid hour, work 10 hours a day, then have to go out with coworkers or the boss and drink till 2am. Come home and pass out.
Meanwhile, wives don't work, so they spend all day watching Korean dramas, cooking, cleaning, going to their kid's school or hagwon just raise a fuss to have something to do. Kill time till their working friends get off and go meet them. Drink till 12 or 1, go home, sleep.
Who has time during the week?
On Saturday the rugrats are up early bouncing off the walls, mom and dad don't even have time to sleep in and cuddle much less anything else. Dad probably brought work home, mom is doing the shopping and driving the kids here and there. Sunday is church day - and when I say Sunday is church day, I mean it. They're up early to go to bible study class, stay for a sermon. Have lunch with other church people, sit around and chat, then back to church for evening sermon and dinner after. Get home just in time to help the kids finish up homework, mom finishes up housework, dad grabs a soccer game and falls asleep on the couch.
Most of the sex for their entire marriage happened on the honeymoon when the first kid was conceived. After that, sex is only necessary again when grandma and grandpa start pushing for another grandchild.
Now, who can find time for sex in all that? That gets worse if one or more of the grandparents live with the family, as is common. Or another family member like a sister or aunt or uncle lives there too, again really common.
This is why Korea spends more on internet porn than any other country. I'm not lying, look it up. |

So elderly couples were included in the sample as well? I would imagine that bringing the average down. |

^Is it just me, or does this sound like the very definition of hell? I'm not Korean but that was just depressing reading. Makes you re-think even dating the locals.
Also, regarding lack of sex with their partners, here the men can easily get it elsewhere for cash (noraebang, barber poles, business clubs, etc.) so that may be a factor too. |

As a point of comparison, how is that relevant? It's not like they choose spring chickens from one country and compared them with dinosaurs from Korea. The survey was fair. |

I'd say cultural and social conditions factor in with age with regards to different countries.
How many Portuguese men aged 34 and up work 50+ hours a week, with no overtime while their wife stays at home to raise a child virtually alone because the husband comes home drunk from a company dinner late at night and has to wake up early to go to work the next day.
Also, if >30% of Korean men cheat on their wives (from another study) then Korean men over the age of 34 have the financial means to afford those room salons and prostitutes so they don't have to sleep with their wives. |

| Another factor is that it often takes two incomes to make it in Seoul these days. Many of you seem to assume women do not work. That is false. My wife works more than me. |

| I've heard Japan has the highest rate of sexless couples. Too bad they weren't surveyed, because I'm curious how Japan compares to Korea. |

Korean news sites aren't exactly known for having solid sources. I bet you I could post a blog tomorrow with "proof" that the world is flat, and the Korean news would report it as fact. |

| This is a non-survey but a propaganda to induce Koreans to improve their fecundity. The population is aging. Need more kids. We are last! We have to be first! Exhaustion is no excuse for celiabacy. Copulation is NOT a performance art. When there are more kids, the price of raising them will come down. The MARKET works! So, women of Korea, what are you waiting for? Play the oil well-strike and get a gusher! |
