A Seattle woman who is receiving welfare assistance from Washington state also happens to live in a waterfront house on Lake Washington worth more than a million dollars.

Federal agents raided the home this weekend but have not released the woman or her husband's name because they have not officially been charged with a crime. (For the record, their names are David Silverstein and Lyudmila Shimonova. The husband is a chiropractor.)

However, federal documents obtained by KING 5 News show the couple currently receives more than $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers, plus state and government disability checks and food stamps. They have been receiving the benefits since 2003.

The 2,500 square-foot home, which includes gardens and a boat dock, is valued at $1.2 million. And even though the couple has been receiving the benefits for nearly 10 years, records show that they accurately listed the address of their current home when applying for the state and federal benefits.

As if the million dollar home weren't enough, the supposedly low-income couple also gave money to various charities and traveled around the world to locales in Turkey, Tel Aviv and resort towns in Mexico, according to court records.

A Texas woman who for months was unable to qualify for food stamps pulled a gun in a state welfare office and staged a seven-hour standoff with police that ended with her shooting her two children before killing herself, officials said Tuesday.

The children, a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, remained in critical condition Tuesday. The shooting took place at a Texas Department of Health and Human Services building in Laredo, where police said about 25 people were inside at the time.

Authorities identified the mother as Rachelle Grimmer, 38, and children Ramie and Timothy. Laredo police investigator Joe Baeza said Grimmer had recently moved to the border city from Zanesville, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Columbus.

Despicable.

Reminds me of a story I read buried in the Times about how these Orthodox Jewish ladies received a city stipend for essentially "running" a no-show class.

They pulled 6 mil from the scam before they were busted.

As an update to the second case, the 12 year old girl has died:

Authorities say a 12-year-old girl shot by her mother during a standoff at a Texas welfare office has died.

Laredo police spokesman Joe Baeza said Ramie Grimmer died Wednesday at a San Antonio hospital. Her 10-year-old brother is in critical condition.

Their mother, Rachelle Grimmer, was found dead Monday inside a state welfare office in Laredo. Authorities say the 38-year-old killed herself after shooting her children during a seven-hour standoff with police.

The girl's Facebook profile had been updated to read "may die 2day" just hours before the shootings.

The family had been denied food stamps. The Texas Department of Health and Human Services says the agency rejected Grimmer's application because she did not submit enough information.

The brother died as well. The mother was denied aid because it was determined that she received suffucient child support to cover rent and utilities and maybe more, not remembering all the details.

Mom should have just shot herself, if she just had to shoot someone.

This is where I feel that gov workers should be held accountable. You fudge big in any job, and you should lose yours. Whoever let this one through should be "paying" for it.

Sounds like she was insane. I would have rather seen her get the welfare money. But how is anybody supposed to know?
