I've been at my elementary schools for a few years and in the past I've always done my health check before the contract begins.

Today I was told by a school administrator that I needed to get another health check done for this school year. When I explained that I already had one done he told me I need to do another one and that it was regulation.

I've never done two health checks in one year in the past. They brought out some official looking document that had a stamp on it and gave it to the other teachers to get a health check too. They also said the school would pay for this one.

Has anyone else dealt with this? What is this about?

If they are paying for it they can request that you do one every month.

Why does it matter?

Thump, bump and listen to your heart. A few hours away from your desk to break the monotony of your day and it is all over with.

Just get it done.

Actually, even the hagwon teachers are having to take another health check before the end of the year. I'm not sure about other cities, but Incheon is requiring it. I'm annoyed because I have had several x-rays this year already. I just had another one today for my health check. It's absurd.

If they already got one with your visa, I wonder what right they have in demanding another. I don't know if you can easily get up and leave, but if you want to argue the principle of it, you could win it. There would be no monetary gain. You'd be out of a job for another reason, but you could rub it in their face they didn't admit to firing you because of this issue.

I wouldn't have gotten fired, but I want to do another year here before going home. It's a pain in the ass. If they ask for it next winter, I'll just say no, because it'll be my last contract.

Many of the public schools will have you do a check that is required of all government employees by the insurance system. It is different from the health statement, immigration requested check. It is also independent of the initial check you might have gotten when you were hired.

I had to do a second check because it was a requirement from the insurance system for all employees of the school. For this test the results are not given to your school. Do not let your school trick you into giving them the results if they ask for them. (unless you want to give them up) They don't have the right to ask for these results. (If it is the insurance requested check). All they can do is ask the insurance company if you took the check, and the insurance company will say yes or no. They are not allowed to disclose the results. If you want to give the results and/or don't care if your school knows, then by all means give it up. This is how it was explained to me anyway.

Tom I agree with what you're saying but the problem for me is that I live in a very rural area so it's quite a bit more than a few hours of inconvenience - it's pretty much a whole day - and then when I get to that hospital no one speaks English and they're always annoyed that my school sends me alone (they dont want teachers to be away for a whole day for the sake of a NET).

The document says the checkup needs to be done before the end of the year but I'm leaving for vacation before that so I was just wondering if this was a serious matter or if I could postpone until I return.

I'm not worried about "failing" the test but I dont feel like dealing with the trouble of one if I dont need to.

You don't need a translator to get around a hospital. Unless your hospital is in NORTH Korea, I can guarentee you that there are many people there who speak English. If you are that worried about it, have your coteacher write up a quick note in Korean that says what you are doing and why you are there and give it to the information desk at the hospital. They will point you in the right direction.

None of your complaints make any sense. Why would you not want to leave work and get out for a whole day? Even if you really LOVE your job, this is part of it. So what's the big deal?

When were you notified about this request?

Just get it done. Honestly, it sounds to me like you ARE worried about failing a certain part of this test and are looking for a way out of it.
