Now and then I see some adjushees hanging around subway exits with their id around their neck and giving out tickets or fines to random people for some reason. They kind of look like the parking adjushees except theyre working for the city or subway
Maybe Im wrong. Anyone encounter these dudes?? |

They hand out fines for smoking/dropping cigarette butts on the floor. Well at least that's what they tried doing to me. |

Wow, what subway station? I've heard of such things, but never noticed, and I've been here a decade. |

You'll see them regularly at Samsung Station, Gangnam-gu Cheong Station, Cheongdam Station.
I had one guy follow me 2 blocks until I finished my cigarette. I saw a pot next to a tree with cigarette butts in it already and tossed mine in. The guy picks it up to show me the "evidence" and demands my ID card to write me a ticket. I show him my US Driver's License, tell him I don't speak Korean. After a minute of lecturing about throwing butts on the street, they guy lets me go.
They need a Korean address to mail the fine to. |

I would have held on to it and pretended to toss it. They would be searching behind a bush trying to find the butt, |

If it is anything like the smoking in the subway fines, only about 30,000. |

I got one of these fines.
I was in a hurry and threw my butt down at the base of the stairs (where also were 20 others on the ground).
Bad i know, but believe it or not, it is the only butt I remember ever throwing on the ground, and I did so only because I was in a big hurry and because it appeared that there was already a pile of them and that they would definitely be cleared up by someone whose job was to do so.
Anyhow, yep. 30.000W. I still haven't gotten around to paying it yet. Not sure if the fine is optional or not, or where to pay it... |

I got one too back when I still smoked. 30,000 Won, but I didn't pay it. I went to the Gu office near where I got busted, and told the director I learned my lesson, and he let me off scott free.
If they say no, just keep asking till they finally give in. But you have to be really nice about it, and don't forget to be persistant. It helps if you know a bit of Korean and offer to teach them English.
You will know them by their bright yellow armbands - they shall chase you to the end of time to catch you. |
