I guess he was a legitimate hero of the whole '89 thing. I've read some things about his later presidency that weren't entirely flattering. And I've never really warmed to the idea of artists and writers going into politics.
He presided over the breakup of his country, which is never really a mark in favor of a leader. Though I realize there probably wasn't a lot he could do to stop it.
