I will be going home for Christmas this week and taking my korean cellphone. I plan to call my GF in Korea on Christmas, and was wondering what's the best or cheapest way to do it.
Will it be very expensive if I just use my Korean phone?
Besides Skype, what other options are there? |

Don't know about now (it has been a couple years since I was last Stateside) but back in '08 it cost a couple dollars per minute (2500 won) for global roaming calls made on a Korean phone while in the States and Canada.
Inbound calls also cost an arm and leg to receive.

Yes it will be expensive. Skype is your best bet, or use KakaoTalk if you can find a wireless connection.
I'm back home for a few months and my gf is Korean and we use mainly KakaoTalk (I have wireless in my home), Skype, and the occasional text message. |

By 'Korean phone' alone, it is ambiguous whether you're keeping it on roaming, or you wish to merely use your Korean handset after obtaining a new American SIM card.
If the former is the case, as others have said, don't even bother. If the latter is the case, on the other hand, your handset may or may not be country-locked and may or may not be compatible with the American networks in your area.
Technically, if it is possible to get roaming service (check through your Korean carrier) then it is technologically feasible to get a SIM card of that particular network and use your Korean handset right away. If, however, your handset is a bit old and hasn't been properly unlocked by your Korean carrier, new American SIM card will get you nothing even though it could have otherwise. |

My Korean phone didn't work in the States.
Options besides Skype? MSN has a talk function. Or google talk.
Or...you could pack your girlfriend in your suitcase and then you wouldn't need to call her. |
