In an effort to make the board a little more welcoming to new users, I figured a little friendly advice would be helpful. Please add to it, and keep the snarkiness elsewhere.

1. Don't take anything too personally, sometimes we all have bad days and it's easier to growl at someone on a message board than deal with the actual problem.

2. If you're going to ask about a school- post the schools name in the thread title. It's a very smart idea to ask about a school before signing, but lots of people will skip over the thread unless it's clear what school you're asking about.

Be yourself (on here) no matter what they say.

Works for me.

Oh, and newbies - please remember NOT to interrupt the old hand's conversations - even if they occur on a thread you initiated and are not relevant to what you had initially asked. Hijacks are their right. Besides, if you are not part of the in crowd - well, you know, you just aren't worth the effort.

Peppermint, I'm sure your post is well intentioned, but it comes across as being condescending. This is just a message board. Go out and smell the roses. Leave the teacher at school. People will figure things out, trust me.

Use this thread as a stellar example of:

People starting out with good intentions only to be spat upon
People complaining that they feel left out the so-called "clique" (waaa!)
Newbies in your face with guns ablazing complaining that they haven't been made to feel welcome

and last but not least...

A regular poster actually trying to make life easier for newbies, and getting spat upon for it

Kind of ironic, don'tcha think?

Don't question, second-guess or state your opinion if contrary to any poster who has been here longer than you. Like Koreans, you must respect them and their views, no matter how ridiculous you may think they are. If you speak your mind or execise your basic freedom of speech, you will be labelled a "Troll" and/or "Flamer" and your post "Trolling" and "Flamebait". These terms are vague and vacuous, with no hard definition/distinction between them.

Wipe the tears and stop being wusses, you whining little babies. Get in there and fight like a warrior! Everyone starts at the bottom. It's like voting: Unless you put in the effort to participate you have no right to complain.

And since I'm helping right now, I'll clear up some terminology:

A troll
First post in thread: "All Koreans are idiots. Screw you, Kim!" or, "All western chicks are tubby cows." or "Canadians are blah blah blah."

Flame-bait
"Of course you say that, you're a fan of Saddam. You're probably a homo as well."

Fredom of Speech
A wonderful concept to be found in the constitution of many nations. However, there are many people who use this right without respecting what it represents. Many see it as, "I can say whatever I want without consequence. Weee!"

Since there is no bill of rights on the internet, it is up to the host of the webpage/ messageboard to decide what they consider allowable.

Make no mistake, this is Sperling's house and as long as you're under his roof, you're following his rules. The mods are there to enforce his rules. They also take the brunt of the whining for him.

So be nice to them.

I don't think that anyone is complaining about being left out. I think it was just an observation ( and a fair one) on JJJ's part and more relevant to part of the culture of this board than a complaint. I'm sure JJJ has a life.

And:

Newbies are adults, they got themselves here, they can cope. They can read the FAQ section. Sorry, but this thread came across just a tad condescending to me.
Anyway, it's time to go out and enjoy this beautiful day.
