you may want to check with your school if they're being funded..... if you're still around and you're interested in renewing.
I was surprised, shocked frankly, that my school will be funded, but it is.
This means I can stay if I want, though I probably won't.
They are synchronizing contracts though, as reported earlier, to begin on either March 1 or September 1 (to coincide with beginning of new semesters)
since mine expires in the middle of a semester, it would mean a 4 month break before I could come back (unpaid and unhoused obviously). and it would mean moving out and then moving into a new appt when I came back.
now you're all informed. |

So, how would you handle the visa issues? Are you on E2? |

yes.
I haven't asked.
I'm guessing the answer is the simplest and most logical one, that being simply having to get a new E2 visa. In my case, since I came here under the old regulations (local crime check, etc) that would enable me to adhere to the new regulations when getting a new E2.
I'm guessing that the so called renewal contract would be signed prior to my departure and I would be responsible for procuring a new E2 before the start of the new contract term. |

I'm under contract until May 2012. My school told me they will be given funds for next year but won't receive the funds until the Fall 2012 semester. Therefore, they said they're not sure how they can pay me during the summer.
If they can't find a way I have to leave, no way can I stick around for 3 months without pay!
Anyone else in a situation like this? |

precisely my situation. However, having the 3, actually 4 months is something I welcome greatly as I'm massively Korea'd out and it gives me the opportunity to get out of here for an extended period of time. I was thinking of spending 3 months in Brazil.
if your school wants to or can scrape up funds to keep you employed on their own personal budget during that time, I'm sure they have that prerogative, but what's most likely is they'll simply say sorry.. we can't pay you until Sept 1 when your new contract begins.
since you'd be renewing, your flight back to US/Canada, etc and the return flight to Korea should be paid for as part of your "renewal", it'll simply be more than the old "2 calendar weeks". Even if you haven't managed to save anything, the year end /contract end bonus equivalent to a month's pay should keep you afloat back at home during that time.
what I don't quite understand is while I understand Gepik's desire to standardize the timing of the contracts, it's obvious they won't all stay that way, as people will quit/ run, etc and I'm curious what will happen then. It's possible in a runner/quit situation the school will be left without a NET until the beginning of the following semester. That's the only way they can keep this system.
another approach is taking the cash equivalent of that flight home, as the contract allows, and flying to Thailand or somewhere else for those several months. You can easily live in several places in SE Asia on a small budget during that time.

They mentioned they can possibly keep me here on their own funds, but they said it's still too early to speculate.
Whatever happens I won't be disappointed. If I can't stay, this might give me the guts/incentive to go to Japan and hunt for a job on the ground. I always wanted to be there anyway.
Hmmm... sending me home and bringing me back in September is a great idea but they didn't mention that possibility. It would be better for them to do that than take a chance on another teacher, at least they know my character.
Time will tell....

maybe their brain synapses aren't fully firing at the moment, but if they want you back, that's precisely what should/will happen and what they should figure out for themselves. If they can't figure out this super obvious solution, if you're sure they want you back, simply suggest it to them. |

yea i will. i'm quite sure they want me back.
the vice-principal already said a month ago he wants me to stay for "years."
this could be a win win for me. i could spend the summer in japan and if i can't snag a job i'd have something to fall back on. also, if i went directly there they'd save big on flight money.

don't worry about them saving on anything. The funds are allotted in a full NET package. They're not supposed to pay for any flight that's not to your home anyways. In such a case, (only if you are RENEWING) you're entitled to a cash equivalent of the most direct KAL flight home and then you buy the ticket to wherever else you'd like to go yourself. Since KAL prices are preposterous, that's more money in your pocket.
the hole in your plan is you're being unfair to your school if you promise to come back and sign a renewal contract, then fly to Japan, find something there and decide to stay in Japan. Never use or screw over schools or people. It's bad karma, much less a question of honor and integrity.
If Japan is your top option, then learn by when your school would need to know if you're returning or not. This could possibly be as late as 60 days prior to Sept.... so let's say July 1. Then you'd have a chance to seek work in Japan in May/June, but you'd have to pay for your flight there, and your flight home, as the contract only allows for a flight directly back home after the end of your contract. |

i wouldn't "promise" to come back. i'm not like that. i'd get all the E2 paperwork ready to have on hand and if i don't find anything i'd tell them i'm available if i don't find anything and they still want me. i'm on good terms with them on a personal level. i think they'd be ok with it if it suits both of our interests.
as far as the flight ticket, i think they would be appreciative if they could save money. the principal has to approve the ticket and they weren't happy with the cost of the ticket my recruiter arranged. they were even making a big deal about getting some kind of 30,000KRW coupon that was available for my flight.

can't comment on ticket stuff, but it's essentially stated in the contract that it's a direct KAL flight. People like to say that principals like to put away extra/saved money from a NET package into their personal or school stash, but I'm not sure that's allowed/it's something they could potentially get in trouble for when audited by the POE.
sounds to me you then have to establish with the school by when they need to know whether you'd be available to come back or not. Jul 1 will surely be the latest. It's possible the school may want to know before your depart and finish your current contract. |
