So I've worked at a hagwon for about 10 months now and my director told me that the hagwon is shutting down on Feb 1st. He told me this news on January 27th. This is ridiculous! And now I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get my severance and plane ticket home. What can I do? I'm so stressed out because of this situation. Thank you.

IF they are not going to help you with the flight out (severance is a non-starter at month 10) then you may need to negotiate something.
30 days pay in lieu of notice is due to you. Negotiate what you can. IF you can't come to some mutual consensus then the next stop is the local labor office. You will need a Korean speaker to assist you.

IF they actually do file for insolvency they you may be out of luck. You can't get blood out of a stone.

If they don't you may be in luck and can recover your pay in lieu and may get your other benefits.

As to other matters .

Switch your visa from E2 to D10.
It takes any time pressure off (you have 6 months to take care of your issues and/or find new work), allows you to seek new work and transfer back to an E2 with a minimum of fuss and no new documentation from home.

What do you think? Is he losing money or does he just not want to pay you what you've earned?
He may be just playing you. Go into work on February 1st and so on unless he gives you something "in writing" and with his signature...If you don't show up, he can say you quit..He knows he can't fire you at the 11th month so maybe he's trying to do it in month 10. Then again, if he is going bust, not much you can do or complain about.

Anyway, sorry to hear that this is happening to you.
