I need a new digital camera for vacation. Something simple - point and shoot. The prices in Korea are pretty steep compared to the US, and I was wondering if they would be cheaper in Kuala Lumpur? Anyone have experience with the prices there compared to Seoul? |

Singapore and HKG = yes.
KL = probably not (not a free market/free port).

Really?
I spent a couple days in Singapore and I remember it being more expensive than any other SE Asian country.
Maybe I'll go poke around Yongsan. |

singapore is just ridiculously expensive in general. it's just my opinion, but i don't know how anyone could like that country. it's just an needlessly expensive and clean place populated by a bunch of old fat expats or rich young douchey banker types. |

My info is definitely dated (about 8 years old), but I bought a camera in Singapore. It was much cheaper than anything I found in Thailand, Malaysia, and definitely South Korea. Electronics seemed to be the one item that was cheaper than elsewhere in SEA.
You might want to pose this question on lonely planet's thorntree (or do a search, this question is probably asked often there). |

If you're there making a developed country's living wage, it isn't bad. It also seems like Shangri-la after backpacking for monthis in South Asia.
I like the place personally. Clean, good transportation, excellent food. Sure, it isn't as cheap as surrounding countries, but it certainly wins out on choices and options. |

I bought a watch that I'd been eyeing for a time in Kuala Lumpur in November. It cost $510 there, far lower than the $750 I was quoted at Incheon Int'l Airport's duty-free store.
Malaysia has good prices, at least the places where I shopped. A GQ U.K. edition magazine costs nearly 20,000 won in Korea but less than half that in Malaysia. |
