Hello all
I am considering taking a job in Cheonan, and I am curious as to what the city is like. I cannot find very much about it on-line, and my travel guide only has a simple two-page description. Typical information: food, bars, ex-pat scene, that sort of stuff.
Thank you in advance. |

It's in a good central location, but it's pretty much a whistle-stop town. I've seen a few good bars there if hanging out with foreigners is your thing. |

Bar room crap is everywhere.
Anyway, I did visit a nice museum there. |

The bar scene isn't great, but there is one and it's not bad. It's fairly convenient to Seoul, although still a fair hike, and you can't taxi back; you have to stay in Seoul overnight. It's a bit of a dump looks wise, although there are some newer areas that aren't too bad. Bit farmers in suits territory but still, it's on Line 1.
There's a pool night for foreigners that draws a big crowd if large group socialising is your thing.

It's alright. A medium-sized city, lots of jobs. Banks, restaurants, department stores, a happenin' bar scene for locals but only a few 'foreigner' bars.
Last I checked there was The Banana Bar and Rock Station. There may be more now...it's been a few years.
Tons of countryside on the outskirts. Pretty scenery, lots of lovely girls to keep you company. I worked for two years in those outskirts, and commuted to Cheonan on the weekends.
I think the city has potential, but generally it's what you make of it... and also, your happiness is gonna depend upon your job a little too. |

I used to live there, but I can't comment on what it's like now. I do know that some parts of town have grown rapidly--the place where I used to live was very near Sang Myung University/Gagwonsa/Taejosan, and at that time was quite rural. I lived in the only high-rise apartment building around and could literally watch a farmer use a cow (ox?) to plow his field. This was about 12 years ago. The last time I was there, maybe 2 years ago, the entire area was apartment buildings and the open fields were gone.
That being said, the town as I knew it was fairly spread out and there were some pretty places like mine and there were some older and dirtier areas as well. The area near the main bus terminal/Galleria is nice, and Seoul is a short hour (often less, depending on traffic) away.
I have no idea about the bar scene or dating or anything like that. |

It's on the #1 line with rapid trains so you can get to Songtan, Suwon, and Seoul with ease. |

I've lived in the area for 7 years. It's got everything you need basically, as long as you're not the type to want to hit the foreigner bars every night, becuase there are only a 3 here and that will get old fast. There's been a huge amount of upgrades near the bus terminal, and it now rivals one of the big Seoul entertainment complexes. There's one of the top uni hospitals in the country you can go to for medical stuff. Shopping is no problem, as there are about 10 big Emart/lotte/homepluses. And it really is super easy to get to Seoul, or anywhere in the country for that matter. But, it's not exactly "nice." No big rivers, lakes or ocean. |

It's more built up around there now. Actually that's one of my favourite areas of Cheonan. |
