Quick question: is it legal for a university winter camp organizer to deduct money from a persons normal monthly salary for any time missed due to illness during a winter camp program? The person running the camp decided to pay another teacher to cover my friend's classes at a rate of pay my friend had not agreed to and is now expecting my friend to pay the difference! |

It's legal than as long as they are not deducting more than she would normally make for the day. |

If the teacher say makes 100,000W a day and didn't show up for work with no sick days available, she should have 100,000 deducted from her pay check. Nothing more.
You don't lose your days wage and then on top of that lose more money to pay for the other teacher. (Unless you agreed to it.)
I'm not sure of the Labor Law here on sick leave for a part time camp job. I'd imagine you are not entitled to it because you haven't worked there for more than 6 months. You are a temporary employee. |

They can deduct (or more appropriately, not pay) the salary for the day but they cannot legally take more nor can they impose a penalty (strictly and explicitly forbidden under the labor standards act).

That's what I thought. It sounds like this teacher is losing her days wage and then on top of that is having to pay more money for the other teacher. That is not right.
Unless for some stupid reason she agreed to pay the other teacher, say 120,000W for covering her classes. (Even though she only makes 100,000 a day, hypothetically). But it doesn't sound like she agreed to it. |
