Hi guys, I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
I have a whooping $1000 to work with and will be going to Korea in 1 week.
Here's the issue
I'm working for Hagwon (this isn't the issue)
I have to pay for my own rent
Was planning on living in a Goshiwon.
Do internet research... Doesn't look like there's any goshiwons in my area.
I'll be living Dongtan Hwaseong (where qiranger lives) and I'm FREAKING out because it all seems like officetels over there. I have no idea how I'm going to survive living off $1000. Can anyone help me in this area? Either know that goshiwons in that area exist or know where I can find out?
I tried looking up galbijim and no avail... I did google research and even youtube.

Coming to Korea to live in a Goshiwon (closet)? So where are you living now? In a gutter.
You don't live in a Goshiwon, you merely exist. If your employer can't provide decent housing then you need a different employer.
So how are you coming to Korea? In a shipping container?
Spend a small fortune to get an education, and achieve what? Living in a closet. My dog has better accommodation. |

What an (EDIT).
Most of us spent a small fortune on education, only to end up here in Korea, for one reason or another. If you've never had sub-standard housing from a Korean employer then count yourself lucky. |

I've had substandard housing in Korea but I never had to stay in a goshiwon and I definitely never had to pay my own rent. Why isn't your employer paying your rent? That's almost a standard part of the offer. If you're paying your own rent, then you might as well go to another country where the money is better or the visas are more convenient.
I've seen goshiwons before. They really are just a big closet with a sink and a mattress. Imagine living in a student dormitory but not all the people there are actually students. That's a goshiwon. I've stayed in a yokwon/hostel before and it seems very similar but just that it's temporary. It's ok for a while but you would probably get depressed quite quickly coming home to that every day. |

I'm thinking that since the OP is not getting housing like regular English teachers, he or she is either a gyopo (yes, we still get screwed), a non-native speaker of English, or someone who never finished college.
Seriously, I have to say get another employer. |

lol I'll be working for CDI which is why I have to find my own housing. Before the flood comes in with CDI hate, I am a stoic by nature (stoicism is similar to minimalist lifestyle). I am completely fine with less than perfect housing. And in fact, I'm trying to get away with spending. I'm all about saving.
Also I've lived in much worse. Roomed in the living room with 2 girl a guy and 2 dogs. After that... a closet sounds like a sweet deal. |

I'm by no means a CDI advocate, but to be fair, they're not all bad. If you're working for one that doesn't provide the option of school supplied housing, however, it's probably a bad one. I know the one in Suwon has apartments that they charge about 400,000 in rent on (but no key money down), which is about what you'd pay for a goshiwan. If you're paying 300-400,000 and living in a goshiwan it's pretty freaking awful. |

I've been spending my last week in Korea in a goshiwon and it's not that bad. Once the OP starts to get paid he can move if he feels like it.
The biggest worry I would have is CDI backing out of the contract. I hear they don't like "stoic". MORE ENERGY. |
