This doesn't make any sense to me.

Mine is

1=5
2=5+2^1=7
3=5+2^2=9
4=5+2^3=13

5=5+2^4=21

Just saw yours, nice, I couldn't find another better one, so I guess it is the right answer?

5+2^0 would give 6 though... so 5+2^(n-1) doesn't fit perfectly either, but I can't come up with anything better.

Fortunately I think it has been proven that any number can be a logical continuation of any number sequence, which makes any answer a correct one :p

My high school math teacher told me: given any 3 numbers in the world, he can find the 4th one to fit perfectly with an equation that calculated from the 3 numbers.

The OP wasn't asking for a number sequence. If he had, my answer would be wrong. All he wanted was the pattern of the five numbers and I gave him one. For my answer it is (n*3) but then you add a number. Look at the order the numbers go. -2, -1, 0, 1, 2. That's the pattern.

Since the OP has since changed the topic that would lead me to believe I am right.

Your answer is fine, just like many others. Just write it as n*3+|n-3| and it's even more consistent than the other suggestions.

That's a beautiful one, thanks.
