Of course he could have and should have handled the Sandusky situation differently; but he did not deserve to go out this way.

Sandusky killed him, if Sandusky wasn't a child rapist and all this media attention wasn't happening, joe would still be alive and killing.
Sandusky has to live with killing Joe and ruining the lives of all those young men he molested! |

he was a classy guy who stood for something. he stood for h is players, they graduated. Integrity is what he stood for. the Sandusky thing , forget about it, he was put in an impossible situation , by the police, the administration and Sandusky. he was let down by all of them. he took the fall. Fine man who lived well |

I didn't follow the whole story very closely, but didn't Paterno know about Sandusky and kept him around after that? If so, that is not my definition of classy. |

Really!? A man who was treated like a God in a college town, the most important man on the campus was in an impossible situation. No, he was in a difficult position, but he could and should have gone to the police. Why he didn't we will never known; it's an unfortunate stain on an otherwise prestigious and wonderful career as one of the greatest college football coaches ever. I agree with everyone else I would have like this to have ended differently than it did, but let's not pretend the Sandusky matter never happened. |

But he did go to the police as soon as he was aware. In fact he met with the chief of police. At that point legally he was off the hook it was up to the police to follow through. Apparently they did not. You DO Not go screaming child molester about someone unless you have proof. You are putting someones life in danger for one thing. I assume that after the police did not act Paterno had no choice but to believe the charge was untrue. |

Petty sure he went to the chief of campus security, which is very different to going to the police. Sad that it happened and sad that it probably contributed to his passing, but he made a big mistake not seeing it through. |

Its a small point but the Penn State campus police are a real police force just like a small town. The head of campus security is the police chief for the area. Yeah even Paterno said before he died that he probably did not do enough but when the police and administration do nothing, well you might think twice before acting. The fact that the guy who claimed to have witnessed the assault waited to report it may have clouded peoples judgement. |
