Where in Malaysia are you going to be?
I spent about 4 days in Kuala Lumpur this past summer. I recommend the elephant sanctuary. You get to feed the elephants, see them bathe and even go for a ride if you wish. I believe it's best to go on a tour as they only let so many people in each day. There are a couple other stops on the tour but they all were interesting.

The Batu Caves were really neat and the Petronas Towers weren't bad.
If you are looking for more of a beach vacation I hear the island of Langkawi is really nice.
I really loved Kuala Lumpur and the people in Malaysia. It was a wonderful trip. |

I've only been to Malaysia twice but I don't see that country as a place I can keep going to over and over again. I first went there in 2008 to Kota Kinabalu, and instead of a thumbs down, I gave it the middle finger. That place seriously sucks and many others who've had the misfortune of going there said the same thing.
I went to Kuala Lumpur last year and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't good, either. Shopping and food are great there, but that lasts for, say, one or two nights max. I haven't been to Penang or Langkawi but I've heard from other sources that those aren't the best places in Southeast Asia. |

Malaysia is great. We went a year ago, and when we only had 8 days in summer, we went back, with the plan to just relax (I had just been through 2 horribly stressful months and didn't want to go somewhere where it might suck).
I loved KL, have only been for 2 full days, would have liked 2 more. The long slow bus that you can take for 24 hours is not worth the money...it's too slow to take you where you really want to go. I loved the art and architecture (a personal fascination). People were friendly, and not nervous to chat like Koreans may be. I loved the bird park, but I do love birds.
Penang is a bit crazy and crowded, but some people really enjoy that sort of thing (Georgetown specifically), but very interesting. I thought I had my share of temples already, but some were still quite cool. Nice to walk some areas. Not sure I would go back for a visit, but would be willing to work and live there for a bit to get a better idea. Somewhat polluted, but not as bad as other cities I have been in.
Langkawi is fairly touristy (not as touristy as some cities in Thailand, though fairly similar to other areas there), relaxing and beautiful. The beaches are not as impressive as, say some in Thailand or Australia, but nice to walk along. You can rent a car for cheap if you want (left side drive). It's easy to get around, so it's abetter bet than taxis if you want to meander. We got one for a few days, and used taxis if we were staying close to to home.
The Straits Club Restaurant at the Temple Tree and the restaurant (Nami? not sure) at the Bon Ton (these 2 hotels are right next to each other, run by the same people) have the best meals I have eaten anywhere-and I do mean anywhere. It's an animal shelter, so you may not like it if you do not like cats...many female cats are allowed to roam. I can give you more info if you are interested. We did a afternoon/evening dinner cruise both times. If you get good weather, the sunsets are fantastic! Not the place to go, I think, if you like to party (we don't). Take a look at the attractions on trip advisor and you will get an idea if you would enjoy your time there.
I hope to go back to Malaysia again. I'm jealous of you!
According to acquaintances, the eastern side is more conservative. |

The west side of the country and the large cities are pretty secular. Not exactly difficult to get booze in that part of the country. Penang is more Chinese than Malay.
OP, are you flying into KL? If so, i'd spend a couple days there, a couple days in Penang, and a couple days on Pulau Pangkor or maybe Langkawi. Langkawai is duty free, so it has super cheap booze (at least compared to the rest of malaysia and even Thailand). |
