Hi everyone - I had questions about teaching at SAT hagwons in Seoul: Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

(1) First, where can I find a list of them online? I tried using google, and was able to find Kaplan Korea/Princeton Review Korea, but am unsure of the others, though I know they exist.

(2) What is the salary/comp typically like? On a monthly basis?

(3) What is the likelihood of getting a job for just 3-4 months? Specifically--either from March to June, or from March to July? I ask because I know that 3 month full-time internships are available for the summer, but that's also since those are the peak months when the international students from abroad come home.

(4) What would my chances be? My composite was around a 2300. I'm a senior with a 3.9+ gpa at a top 20 national uni in the US (non-ivy, think Duke/Chicago/Northwestern/JHU level). I would say I'm a pretty normal/decent-looking (guy).

I'm also a "gyopyo" (Korean-Am), so I guess that'd qualify me for an F-2 visa. My Korean is ok. Not superb, but enough to speak with parents at a reasonable level. I some teaching exp, but not a lot, by most means.

Again, thank you for all constructive responses.

That would make it an F4 or a dual citizen provided you don't need to do military service.

1) naver.com
2) IF you are good it can be pretty decent. They are usually hourly and based on enrollments; NOT salary based.
3) slim but not impossible since there are no visa issued involved.
Do be aware however that legally, to be registered at the MOE as a teacher, even if you are F4, you still need a clean FBI check and a copy of your degree with an apostille.
4) boots on the ground your chances may be decent. Applying from abroad your chances are not so good. Until you actually have your degree in hand your chances are just about "0".

Depends on your qualifications and experience. Without a good reputation, you won't earn tons but it's better than regular gigs. If you build a rep, sky's the limit.

Very likely. As a Korean-American, you are very employable, and the vast majority of places that have SAT courses have them only seasonally. You should work May-Aug, though--August is a big month for SAT.

Your chances are good. You may be limited in salary a bit since you don't have your degree yet, but there are lots of jobs for people like you.

The market is dominated by Korean-Americans. Speaking some Korean may help a little, but until you have a serious reputation, you won't be expected to deal with moms too much anyway.

I've been in this specific industry since 2002. PM me if you have specific questions.

Thank you both for your responses so far, I really appreciate them.

FMPJ - I tried to pm you but apparently I need 25 posts before I'm allowed to pm people? Can you send me an email instead, and I can email you my questions? (This way, you don't have to post your email address on the boards).

My personal email is: [email protected]
