So after opening a KEB global account a few weeks ago, I head to my local branch to deposit some money for my electric bill, and to take advantage of the favorable exchange rate. Something stupid happened:

They needed my passport.
For an account I already had to show my passport to open.
To deposit money.

Now I cant pay my electric bill. ARC is somehow no good (is it not real identification?). I've never been a foreigner in the US, but I can't imagine the same thing happening there. Such a waste of time. So angry right now.

Rant over.

Deposit it in the ATM.

Edit: Never mind. Missed the part about the favorable exchange rate. I assume you are depositing US dollars, which you can't do at the ATM.

I had a similar problem with an Internet bill once. They refused to take payment and told me "We don't think this is your bill." I showed them every form of ID I had as well as all my bank documents. Not to mention, the bill was in my name. I gave it to my ex-girlfriend, who went in, showed it to the teller, and had it immediately processed without further questions asked, despite the fact it wasn't even in her name.

There are many people in the world named Erica Jones. In fact, I know two of them who are both in Korea now, if that makes you feel any better.

I can understand it.

I would hate to have people paying off my debts without my permission

I get tired of having to give my passport to Customs for mail to pass through. Often its stuff well under $100. wtf do they need it for? Its happens most on iHerb and PlayAsia orders for me.

For depositing dollars into a global account (that holds dollars), its pretty stupid.

For an exchange at a bank I've already shown my passport to 3 times. Its very stupid.

This happened to me. I said, "is it illegal to pay someone elses bill?" I still don't understand it. Anyways I just got angry and said, "here's the cash, here's the bill, what's the problem?" Then she stamped it paid and seemed pissed off. I thought, go on and be angry crazy woman.

Koreans are really strange people.

ARC, if anything, should be fine. The teller you dealt with doesn't know how to do their job.

I don't get that. What are married couple supposed to do? Sounds to me like you ended up being served by a rookie.

Doesn't your bank have an automatic teller just for paying the bills? Many banks have them now. They won't take payments at the counter anymore at my bank. Last time I tried, they pointed at the machine. There's always someone standing by ready to help when I press the wrong button.

That must be something to do with your local post office because I've never had that problem, and I've had to pay close to 200000won in duty on some orders I've made.

For currency exchange it is rules that they must look at passport, has to do with money laundering to make sure it is the passport holder who is exchanging money also they need passport number. Bill paying no need for passport

im not surprised they wanted a passport...
if i wanted to pay a bill in the UK with dollars or euros , they would give you short shrift!

the earlier poster is right - anything related to foreign currency you do need ID. (once wiring is set up though, you can do it online with KEB)
