I have been looking for a job at a hakwon and have talked to a lot of recruiters. The other day a recruiter told me a public school in Gyeonggi-do wanted to interview me. I had the interview, passed and the recruiter said he will send the contract. He also referred to it as a GEPIK school in that email. I never applied to GEPIK. I worked for GEPIK last year and the application process was totally different.
Is it possible to get a PS job in Gyeonggi-do even though I didn't apply to GEPIK? Are there public schools outside of GEPIK that do their own hiring? Or is this recruiter trying to somehow trick me? I'm waiting for the contract right now. I'm confused about how I could end up being offered a PS job when I didn't apply for one. |

Yes. Some schools have independent funding. These schools are able to choose whom they hire and can work directly with a prospective teacher or their own recruiter.
You will still be a "GEPIK teacher". Because your school is in Gyeonngi-do and is public. Therefore the English program at your school is part of GEPIK. (You still have to do GEPIK training and all that stuff) These jobs have turned out to be safer due to the question marks surrounding provincial funding.
So you will have to still fill out the GEPIK forms and sign a GEPIK contract to my knowledge. But you won't go through the main hiring channel where your application could get trashed or lumped in with hundreds of other equally qualified applicants. |
