I recently tried this out a couple times so I thought I'd pass on the experience.
I'd heard this could be done, but I wasn't sure what number to send the message to or anything else for that matter. Recently I saw one of the subway infomercials talking about the service and found out the number to send it to and what it should contain.
On lines 1, 2, 3, 4 you can send the message to 1577-1234 and 5, 6, 7, 8 it's 1577-5678. Not sure if the other lines have numbers or not.
I haven't tried to send a message in English, but my low level Korean seems to get the job done. You need to include the car number, and then a brief description of the problem. You can find the car number on the door, it'll say something like:
7643칸
The first time I used it there was some guy selling those loud LED musical Tops. The car was crowded and this guy was walking up and down the car just setting these things off. He had like 3 going at once, I had headphones on facing the door and heard the noise. Having just seen the infomercial I sent a short message saying a guy selling stuff was there and the noise was loud.
Less than 2 minutes later at the next stop, an employee got on the train, found the guy and escorted him out. I also received a text message replying thanking me for the report.
A couple weeks after that, I got on the train when it was fairly empty. There was an obviously homeless guy sleeping across for me. He was taking up 2 seats, but it was empty and he wasn't really bothering anyone at that point. After a few stops it started to get full and of course no one was sitting beside him. however, he suddenly leaned over and fully laid down across several seats and while sleeping started to worm his way up the seats towards some old lady. She was quite shocked, jumped up and darted across the train.
I decided to send another message, so I wrote that there was an "uncomfortable sleeping homeless person" on the train as it was the best way I could come up with to describe it. 2 stops later, a staff member got on, found the guy, woke him up, determined the guy was completely out of it, helped him out to a seat off the train and got on the help phone to get him some help. not sure if was an ambulance or what, we pulled away at that point. I received another text message thanking me for the report. This one was different, so I don't think they use templates.
I've only gotten to use it twice, but I find it to be a decent system. The staff were responsive, fast, and took care of the trouble. I haven't had to use it a serious situation (Say someone is going totally nuts), and I didn't try to send an English message. I don't know if someone there could read it or not.
I think if you write the car number, and jam together a couple keywords though from your dictionary they'll get the point. |

Thanks for the tip.
One time there was this guy just ranting and loudly singing on the subway.
Someone reported him because a couple stops later the security showed up. Of course, when the offending person saw the security he faced away and tried to look inconspicuous.
What do the subway workers say, "Who sent the report in?"
Nice. Thats a great way to get someone to help you. That's like saying, "Hey, who's the NARC. Will the NARC please stand up so that the person you ratted out can plainly see your face."
Since no one on the train wanted to speak up and be the target of the crazy guy, the subway security got off of the train. Crazy dude went back to the middle of the car and started ranting/signing loudly again. |

When they came on to get the top salesman, the guy had put his cart to the side a little, and was actually back in the corner, maybe selling one when he came on. So the guy got most of the way through the car and didn't see him. I just inconspicuously pointed in the direction of where he was, and the guy went back and grabbed his cart. Then suddenly the salesman jumped forward to claim his cart.
In that case, I'd send as much detail as possible to describe the guy. I don't know if you could snap a picture and send it. There are apps for taking silent pictures on the iphone. |

It would be fantastic if they just brought him a pillow and some blankets.

I've seen the ads for this subway tattle system and would've used it myself to text the staff about a huge pool of barf blocking an exit but I just wanted to run away from the stink that filled up the car. Surprisingly, no one else seemed to notice. |
