|

Hi, question on behalf of a friend.
Her current public school contract finishes at the end of February. She has signed a 6 month renewal contract for march to august. She's going to finish the current contract but has since decided that she doesn't want continue after that.
Any possible negative consequences? |

Her boss may refuse to cancel her visa. In which case she will have to wait for it to expire before she can work somewhere else. |

If she doesn't fulfil the contract she will be leaving Korea. For now at least. Any possible trouble should she wish to return next year?
Thanks. |

The onus is on her, she is legally required to report a change in her status within 14 days of the change. change of status would include things like changes in employment, change of residence, change of passport, etc.
Failure do to so can have consequences (depending on when and how it was discovered and the nature of the unreported change) ranging from a warning and note in her immigration file up to detention pending deportation.

She intends to leave Korea within 3 or 4 days of finishing her contract on February 29th.
She intends to leave her ARC card with immi at the airport.
Does that make everything cool?
Could the school or Epik make things difficult if the prove to be pissed off with her for not starting the new contract? |

That is fine PROVIDED her ARC hasn't expired before she leaves.

Odds on the school canceling her visa the very day she doesn't show up for the new contract. Where does she plan to stay for those "3 or 4 days"? Staying in the school-provided housing will certainly not be a viable option. |

She knows she'll have to leave the apartment on the last day of her contract.
She will then stay in a motel for a couple of nights and fly out of Korea then.
When you finish a contract, how long do you have to leave the country?
Our ARC cards and visas on our passports go way beyond March. Are they affected when our contracts finish? |

Why is she running instead of doing the decent thing and telling her school that she changed her mind? It is not too late for the school to find her replacement so why is she taking the shady way out instead of just telling the truth? If she did that, she wouldn't have to worry about being blacklisted or having any trouble when she wants to come back. It should be as simple as that. |

14 days to
a) leave or
b) report to immigration for change of status.

Who said anything about doing a runner? She's going to give 30 days notice but she's signed the new contract already. She's just worried that they might be so pissed off that they might make things difficult. She's giving plenty of notice. I was just wondering that, if they are suitably pissed off can they have such an effect that she wont be able to work a public job in Korea again?
Again it goes back to the fact that she has signed a new contract which, fair enough hasn't started yet. |

My mistake. The tone of the whole thread made it sound like she wasn't going to tell them and just leave. If she gives them proper notice, it shouldn't be a big deal. They might be royally pissed, but she's not dealing with a private academy so she shouldn't have to worry about having money withheld, blacklisting, etc. |
