|
|
I've noticed, or been unable to block out construction noise which started this AM at 8:15 or so. At 10:30 pm I finally went down to point at my wrist indicating time and shrugging my shoulders. The guys bowed and looked apologetic. Then after I left, went back to drilling cement in the adjoining yet sound connected building.
Is there no noise ordinance against people who are such douche bags they just keep going with the construction? Is there someone to call? |

Lets put it this way, you can deal with the construction sounds over a period of 1 month.
or
It can all be over in 1 week. |

Damn.
Well, I flagged down a cop car just because it had started to piss me off. Coincidentally, a Korean dude was standing right there and helped translate!
I mean what are the odds?? Holy Bat-hogwan!!!
At any rate. The translation worked but the cops said there's no law prohibiting it. The guys are "just workers' yadah, yadah, yadah. They (the cops) were nice though and went over to the two guys and asked them to finish it up for the night...they even apologized for the noise.
Unfortunately, I now must take back every negative comment I've made about English education in Korea.
Damn, weird night.
I will not say bad things about English education in Korea

| A buddy of mine a couple of years ago lived next to a church which would start practicising music at 4 AM. They'd crank their amps and music would blare out. He went over and point to his watch making a sleeping motion, telling them to knock it off. There seems to be no common sense here about noise at night sometimes. But many people can also be courteous too. |

You have to understand, Korea is a country that never really sleeps.
Also, why are you sleeping at 8:00am? Most people are up by then. Well that is the thinking of most Koreans.
Be careful of the flip side. Most Koreans can get away with making noise at all hours. But a westerner makes too much they might get the cops called on them.
Ear plugs are your friend. |

As far as I know, there are by laws concerning noise and time. Most major construction sites will display decibel levels on a real time basis. As well, they are prohibited from working between the hours of 11pm and 6am (if I remember correctly).
I lived beside 3 major construction sites for a few years, and had to deal with this a few times. |

This is Korea. If people want to drill at 8 a.m., then you just have to bear with it. Nothing doing, man. I also get annoyed when speakers are blaring from people selling fruit at 8 a.m. or earlier, but I just go back to sleep. I've got used to it. |

Thanks for the responses.
I have to say, everyone was polite about it despite not stopping the noise. The cops seemed sympathetic but powerless to do anything about it. The guy who did the translating said he was aware other countries had laws about noise etc...
I'll no doubt continue to find it annoying to deal with while it lasts but I also remember asking people in the States to turn it down and it's easy to find polite, reasonable requests turn into angry, threatening responses....at least that doesn't happen here.
They ended up drilling or whatever until almost 1am. I was awake at 8am though I was sleeping in as I'm on vacation. |

Ear plugs are a must in Korea. I find the 3M ones are the best, they are kind of spongy and much better than the rubber/plastic ones.
I know it seems useless, but if enough people make complaints to the Gu-cheon...some day...things might change.
The truck guys selling stuff at all hours are breaking laws. Most Koreans like them or don't care enough to report them. |

My place a year ago was much noisier so I came this round with a full armament of noise suppression gear. The best ear plugs you can get from the states are Macks silicone ear plugs. It's the next best thing to caulking your ears over!
I also bought a pair of noise cancellation head phones which for a hundred bucks is well worth it when you're hanging out reading or want to hit a cafe minus the music for "atmosphere". |

Doubtful. It's like they are immune to noise here. |
