|
|
Well, I'm packing up and leaving Seoul for Busan. I am looking forward to the cleaner air, warmer temperature and more relaxed attitude.
Also, cheaper rents - or so I hope.
I need to find a place by March. I will have a dog (and not a yapping lap dog, but a bigger sized dog), and I would like to find something near Pusan National University, but also near a beach. I am thinking maybe a villa type situation, with a garden or at least a balcony. Am I dreaming?
What are your recommendations? Thanks in advance. |

PNU is nowhere near the beach so its going to be one or the other!
I personally would choose to live near my work, thereby having a shorter commute. PNU is a very busy area with shops, restaurants and healthy foreign bar scene. Its right on subway line 1. You can certainly find decent accomodations in that area or near it (one subway stop away for example). As for size, if you want a larger place you will need more key money and/or have to pay a higher monthly rent.
I assume PNU (your employer) is providing a housing amount (roughly 300 000 - 400 000 Won) but are they providing key money or do you have some?
As for your larger dog, I suggest looking for a place near the mountains (lots of them near PNU) so you can walk it there. Villa-type places in or near PNU are not that common and neither is a garden. Most appartment complexes do have a small park-type area.
As for near the beach, that means Haeundae or Gwanganlee both of which are 1 or 2 subway line transfers away and will mean a pretty long commute to work.
Do you know anyone in Busan who can help you find a place? |

Thanks Patrick. You touched on all the important points. I like the idea of the mountains. Yes, my university will provide about 300,000. I have key money, and can even go up to 10 million, but would prefer not to.
I want to live somewhere nice, maybe a two bedroom, with possibly a balcony, near a park or mountains as you mentioned. I guess I can try to get to the beach on the weekends. I think the mountains would be better for the dog anyway.
I think someone at work is going to help me find a place. I just wanted to get some feedback from the people who live out there as to where are the best places to live and what to expect. |

Well with 300 000W housing support + up to 10M in key money you can find a decent place near PNU. I will not be that large but it can be a good place nevertheless!
The mountains (as you must have seen when you went for your interview) are right behind the Uni! Gumjeong mountain is nearby and has fantastic hiking trails.
One thing I wonder about however is getting to the beach. Its not next door subway-wise and not being a dog owner myself, I have no idea how easy it is to use the subway with a dog in Busan! You should check on that.
As for Busan itself, its a great town! I loved everyone of my 11 years there and really enjoy our yearly visits there. We left in 2008 and have returned as a family every year. |

PNU's a great area. Unless it's important for you to be able to walk to work, don't be afraid to look a few subway stops north or south of PNU. They're all along Geumjeong mountain so you'll have good places to walk the dog. From Guseo to PNU edu. the subway is above ground and there is a stream and running/biking path under it. It's a good place to walk the dog if you don't feel like hitting the mountain.
Dongnae in particular has some cheap housing options. |

Oh, thanks so much, guys! I feel really good after reading your messages now. I think this is going to work out really well - I'm so excited!
Patrick - you gave me the PERFECT advice about the mountains - THANK YOU! It's spot on.
Rutherford: I'm going to follow up on your suggestions, precisely. I was hoping there was a bike path somewhere, and so it sounds even better than I imagined! Now, if there is a bike path that connects to other paths that lead to the shoreline or beach - perfect! There must be, do you think?
Anyway, I will start the apartment hunting next week, when I will be in Busan again. Keep the suggestions coming, and thank you. |
