I went to Yangjae Costco today, and to my dismay I couldn't find any Mac n Cheese. Mac n Cheese from the box is one of my favorite comfort foods, and it'll suck if I have to once again start going all the way to Itaewon to buy it.
I'm not surprised if they stopped selling it, though. I doubt many Koreans are interested in the stuff. |

Mac and cheese is one of those "buy it when you see it because it could be years until you see it again" kind of product. They sold a brand called "Annie's" (I think it was) about 3 years ago and when it was gone, it was gone.
Other products in that category are Bisquick, Campbell's Tomato Soup and Triscuits.
That said, if you don't mind making your own, there's a quick way to do it. Boil up some pasta. Put some in a bowl and top with whatever cheese you have handy. Nuke for 40ish seconds. Stir and eat. |

If you must have the powdered cheese kind, iherb.com sells powdered cheese. I get this one for topping popcorn, but it could probably easily be adapted for mac and cheese.

Try making it from scratch, though, and no, don't just nuke cooked pasta with cheese. You need to add butter and milk to get it right. If you want it perfect, a little Dijon and cayenne pepper is the key. |

Do you have any advice for making cheese sauce out of the powdered cheese packets they frequently sell here in grocery stores in Korea?
Ive tried to make sauce several times and it not only does the powder not break down well, but the "sauce" comes out lumpy. I've tried adding more milk and that does nothing. |

I'm going to guess, as I haven't tried it, but I'd add just a little bit of hot milk to it and mix it into a paste, before adding more to thin it out. Use a fork or a mini whisk and just be patient. I'm basing this on hot chocolate and Horlicks experience, so would probably work.
I do recommend that you try the stuff that I linked to, though. It's real cheese, organic, and also makes some great popcorn topping! |

I haven't been able to find the Mac and Cheese in either the Yangjae or Yangpyung Costcos for months.
Probably for the best because usually a box or two in and I don't want to eat that gritty shit no more, but sometimes it's just nice to not really cook and just mix up some Mac and Cheese. |

Same here, I get a craving every once in a while for the stuff. I eat one box and then I'm good for a couple of months. So in that ideal, I still have several boxes left of the stuff. But, there's no logic to retail in Korea. If something sells well, they just up and stop selling it. In the west, companies realize they're making money off it and will keep selling it. Go figure. |

Pricey, but here's the Kraft version:
http://www.ezshopkorea.com/shop/step1.php?number=42262
and if you don't mind the Kirkland brand's take on it:
http://nicemarket.net/node/763
Ezshopkorea used to sell a pack of the Kirkland stuff. 15 boxes or so for about 15k, but they don't seem to have it anymore. I bought a pack a while back for my husband, though nowadays I've reverted back to making it from scratch.
I tried making a sauce from the cheddar cheese powder that I posted earlier, and it came out nicely. I added a tiny bit of real, stinky, mature cheddar that I brought back from England to enhance the flavor. It was great over broccoli. |
