Just a word of warning for everyone; please lock your door and your windows. No matter what floor you live on. Early this morning my wife and I were victims of a break in. We were very lucky that no one was hurt and that nothing was stolen but as you can imagine, we are both very shaken up.
We live on the second floor of a villa and had our balcony windows open to let our laundry dry quicker and without molding. The thief climbed up by stepping on the windows ledges below and some pipes. I had just gotten back from the bathroom and was falling back to sleep when I heard some rustling. I thought the sound was coming from outside but I guess it was from the other room. Seconds later I raised my head and saw this shady figure peering into our room. I screamed (basically like a little girl) and then just kept yelling, HEY! HEY! HEY! I bolted out of bed and ran towards the guy, not to attack him but to close our bedroom door. I guess he then ran off the same way he came in. My wife thought I was having a bad dream but I told her someone was in the house and to call the police. We didnt leave the room until the police came, less than 5 minutes later. The police charged into the house and then to the room the thief had fled to. The guy had locked the door so the police broke it open but he had already disappeared. They took a footprint but I imagine they wont ever catch him on that and I couldnt give much of a description since I didnt have my contacts in. Anyway, sorry to ramble but thought maybe you should be smarter than me and lock up. |

The cops won't probably catch the guy but at least nobody got hurt.
I know a lot of people here scoff at the idea of self-defense and think Korea is the safest place in the world, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
It doesn't happen a lot but it can still happen and when it does, you want to be prepared. Locking your doors and windows is a good first step but I would also invest in a good home defense weapon. If you ever watch the news here, criminals use the pipes to climb up into homes. |

| ^ I tire of hearing about Korea's low crime rate. There's a reason all of the first floor apartments have bars on the windows. They're not there to keep the cat in. |

It was probably the landlord or your boss. They have a habit of just swanning in uninvited. |

Well, my school doesn't own my apartment but it could have been my 80 year old landlord. However, it's quite a climb to my 2nd floor window and he doesn't look like the ninja type.

| A thief in my apartment would be a very bad thing. My life would basically be over after I twisted his head off. |

| Did you provide a description? Medium height, dark eyes, dark hair, answers to the name of Kim, Park, Lee, or Choi. That should narrow it down a bit! |

Never happened to us in my time in K-land. We did have a drunk guy wander the halls of our building at our first appartment and banging on random doors. We called the cops and it ended.
He was an annoyance for sure. |

I've been robbed here alot; even had a few broke old people try to jack me in public and run off(they're old and did not get very far).
Korean police are useless...if the criminal didn't leave a signed confession and a business card he's not getting caught.
However, they will ask you come visit the station multiple times during job hours....if you try arrange alternative time they'll blackmail you into coming("I don't care if you get fired, do you want us to find your stuff??") in.
I suspect most crimes are simply not reported lest you wanna waste 5-10+ hours at a police station.
Even rooftop apartments aren't immune to thieves. They'll climb up assasin creed style |

This is interesting as in my 11 years in Korea I was never robbed or jacked. I can also not recall of any of the people I knew having been robbed often (heck even a few times) much less jacked or threatened, especially by old people.
Different people, different experiences. |

Foreginers not so much. Koreans : much more often.
I work as a photographer...once you start working outside, the thieves show up like clock work.
Obviously hagwons and teachers are pretty immune. You have to be a pretty big D-bag thief to rob a school. |

In general, Korea seems like a very safe place to live. Still I wouldn't want to leave my doors unlocked when I leave home. But, I didn't do that back in the home country either.

Is this real or was that a comedian spliced into a real news footage? |
