| Dongdaemun russian town has a similar sign on one of the clothing stores. I always show it to dates for a laugh. |

I'm sure everyone's aware of the Busan story of foreigners being denied admittance into the sauna there.
I was surprised to see a No Korean's allowed sign as well.
I would just assume both are illegal but I'm wondering if anyone knows what the law actually is? Are they both cases illegal but there's just no interest in enforcement? |

In the case of the naturalized Korean citizen denied access to a sauna in Busan, the police informed her that there is no law preventing such discrimination. |

| the old nashville pub in itaewon had a "no koreans" sign up for years until he was pressured to take it down, wasnt long until he closed the place a few years ago |

It's an interesting area of law isn't?
It looks like discrimination laws are weak or non-existant at best but an individual owner/establishment might change their policy based on public image or pressure..... |

I wonder how the owner would treat Gyopos. If I showed my US passport, would I be allowed entry?
As for the "Foreigner Only Taxi", its false. I'm 100% American and those cabs won't pull over for me because I "look" Korean. I've had to shout in ENGLISH really loud "YO! I'M NOT KOREAN!!!! PULL OVER!!!!!"
Or, I've had to wave my passport around. Guess if I wanted to be a foreigner I should've been born white or black.

I'd always wondered about this. I understand why there's a need for foreign taxis, but at the same time, they're automatically going to lean towards being non-Asian taxis. |

Asian-Foreigners (Japanese, Chinese, Southeast Asians, etc...) far outnumber the "English" speaking foreigners in Korea. However, there clearly is "preferential" treatment given to Westerners.
I can't help but laugh whenever I hear a white foreigner complain about hard it is for them in Korea. |

Korea signed it. The problem is that there really isnt an international committee for cleaning up individual businesses. For the UN to actually do something about it, the Korean government would actually have to support the policies of those businesses.
I'm sure if there were actually enough stories that got published about these kinds of things that the govermenty would step in and say something (not enforce, but say something, typical Korea) about how there is no discrimination and the business would get a slap on the wrist. |

It's not only people of Asian descent they seem to refuse service to. I've been with white foreigners on three occasions where a 'foreigners only' taxi was flagged down, but refused to take us to our destination because it was not the Yongsan US army base. "I'm just a base taxi" was the comment (or to that effect). These occasions occurred twice in the mid to late afternoon coming from Myeongdeong and Jongro respectively, and once at about 9pm on a weeknight from Itaewon.
The destinations on separate occasions were Sinchon and Nowon.
I've never understood those taxis. |

Thanks for the link.
You wouldn't think they'd need an international committee to police the businesses. I presume they signed the treaty as they think it's a good idea - worthy of writing it into law and then enforcing it?
Unfortunately, it looks like a rather superficial signing on to the agreement doesn't it? |

Weird, I've had them drive me all the way home to Anyang at a metered rate without any fuss (highly abnormal). |
