Anyone have any experience on teaching without getting a certification? I'm mainly curious if it is difficult to understand what or how to go about teaching the students without any prior training and if the cert programs really do help you. I was considering getting an online cert mainly to help me understand how to teach foreign students. I know certs aren't really valued all that highly, but is it worth dropping the couple hundred dollars to get one of these certs in terms of the knowledge it gives you?

For background I did do peer tutoring in college, but that was almost always a 1 on 1 basis and it was for things like math and science, so I don't know if that experience relates at all to teaching ESL.

Yes it's very difficult to teach effectively without doing any practical training. You will start off by making lots of basic errors and you will learn some things from your experiences but until you are observed and given feedback from more experienced and trained instructors you will almost certainly continue to do many things you shouldn't be doing in the classroom. An online cert might prevent you from making a few basic errors and give you a few ideas but not much more.

I figured as much, anything you would recommend? Books or the like? I know the classroom cert programs would probably be the best but that's out of the question due to the price.

For teaching kids, look at the CELTYL list

Hey Ibsen,

I have some spots open (and free). Click Sign in and use the registration code "student". I'll add you to the Basic course (you'll get an email). 15 module video course that should give you a good overview of TEFL.

http://schooloftefl.com

I also highly recommend the low tech lessons described in these handbooks. http://bit.ly/ztr19I

Cheers,

DD

I respect the fact that you have apparently put a lot of effort into improving your esl game here in recent years. You've made a psoitive contribution.

But how qualified are you though?

I'd guess that his qualifications are best represented by your first sentence.

I've heard that 100+ Hour TESOL Certification is now a requirement for public school positions (that or previous teaching experience or a degree in English, Education or English Lit.), so if teaching in public schools is of interest to you, keep the certificate hours in mind.

I'm curious about your comment and the reasoning behind it? Could you be more specific about what you are looking for in terms of "qualifications"?

I've nothing to hide and lead a fully transparent professional life. Take a look at my personal page http://www.eflclassroom.com/david or Who We Are on The School Of TEFL.

By the way, been out of Korea for awhile and now teaching at a Teacher's College in Canada.

DD,
Is the course you suggested the TEFL 100-hour certificate?

Are there any more spots available that you could sneak in one more student?

If you'd like to do the course, go to the course page - http://schooloftefl.edu20.org/visitor_class_catalog/show/48766 Click Purchase - Add to Cart. Proceed to register and then when you are asked to pay, enter the discount code "free". You won't be charged.

Start studying the 15 video modules and quiz.

Students cost me money but my intention (and still is) is not to make money but help out teachers. There is a cost right now on the course because whenever I open it, the demand is screaming high and costs me lots. Hope to make it free for all once my main course is running (the 120 hour ) and can support it. Good luck - this offer is for a limited time!
