If you follow boxing, you might have heard of Kim Ji-Hoon. He's the most successful male boxer Korea has had in recent times. After losing his first world title match and sort of falling off the scene, Kim is back again on his journey to become a contender again.

Kim is fighting this Friday (Sat in Korea) in ESPN's Friday Night Fights against Yakubu Amidu (20-2-1) in a lightweight matchup. It will be aired live on KBSN Sports at 10:50AM.

I don't have a prediction since I don't know anything about Amidu (can't even find youtube vids of him), although I can guess that he has decent power in his hands by looking at his KO record. I hope Kim performs well but since his loss at the title, he lost his next fight by TKO in the first round, then barely scrapped by a decision win against a guy who was fighting his fourth fight. It should also be noted that this is first fight in almost a year. But Kim also has the advantage of having fought and knocked out guys with winning records, and some of them with more than 20 wins. Amidu on the other hand, has lost to every guy with more than 20 wins, which means he probably isn't that great technically.

I'm expecting a good fight, maybe a short one since both guys are power punchers with sloppy technique.

Just Boxrec'd his opponent and he isn't bad considering his only losses are to Ricky Burns and an MD loss in the other guy's back yard. Going strictly on Boxrec (I've seen neither fighter) it looks like the Korean is going to be a big underdog here

Yeah I wish I can see Amidu's fights but there's nothing i can find. You have a point though. The thing is he hasn't fought anyone else notable and everyone he beat had really crappy records. At least Kim beat a few guys with decent records.

Here's a few of Kim's fights.
Vs Ameth Diaz

Tyrone Harris

Leonardo Zappavigna

A sparring session last year against a Korean prospect

You'll probably notice with his fights that Kim is really sloppy. Guy really needs to tweak his defense and throw something other than that same jab-straight-lefthook to the body combination over and over again. Although based on that sparring video, he seems to throw more jabs and actually try to connect with them now.

Kim Jihoon is great to watch. That Tyrone Harris fight was a great scrap. But the guy has a terrible defence and is pretty one dimensional. I hope he has improved on that. ESPN always seem to put him and provodnikov on the same bill. Who is promoting him in the states?

Like I said in earlier threads, Kim is exciting to watch but I doubt he can beat anyone decent at this stage without the proper trainer. Perhaps a trainer in the U.S. will take a chance on him if he does well in his next fight.

Speaking of upcoming fights, middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fights Marco Antonio Rubio for a belt and jr. featherweight Nonito Donaire faces Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Feb. 4. I'm hoping Donaire starts to move up in weight to get the real lucrative fights and does indeed replace Pac-man as the next great Filipino boxer.

What time is the fight? Will it be shown on Korean cable?

It's Banner Promotions. Same as Provodnikov. A lot of their guys fight eachother. Most of Kim's fights in the US were against guys from Banner.

Donaire is awesome. Next superstar after Pacquiao retires I bet. Chavez, I'm not sold on yet. I prefer Canelo, and those two need to fight.

At first I didn't think it was going to be, but yes, they actually are! Kim vs Amidu will be aired live on KBSN Sports starting at 10:50 AM. That's tomorrow 10:50

An interesting piece of info I found. Kim's opponent, Yakubu Amidu is the older brother of Abdullai Amidu, an undefeated prospect and sparring partner of Manny Pacquio .

Friday Night Fights has always been "free" if you have ESPN on cable. I usually just went to a sports bar or a friends house back in the States to watch it.

Kim won by unanimous decision after a hard fight. Did not think this fight would last to decision. Hurt Amidu a few times but Amidu recovered well and fought back. Kim looked better than before. I think his defense improved, jabbed better and paced himself well. But he really needs to work on his footwork and positioning. Not to mention throw more diverse combinations.

Also, Provodnikov knocked out Torres in the 6th.
