|

I am considering getting an online TESL certificate if it will up my chances of getting a higher salary or landing a better job in Korea. I know an online certificate will not include a teaching component and will not be recognized anywhere else. I have 3 months left and have the time to complete an online course if it will offer a better salary or slightly better job in Korea. Any opinions? |

For SMOE it's enough of a pay bump to pay for itself in just over a month plus it's a good mini refresher course in ESL and lesson planning. |

Some provinces won't accept an online course without a classroom component for a pay bump, like Jeollanamdo, so that'd be worth checking out. |

I'm currently working here and was given this info when figuring out contracts.
I hope I wasn't lied to, not that that'd be a shocker. Anyone have anything to the contrary? |

At a hogwon, TEFL certificates usually aren't worth anything regardless of whether they're online or in-class. |

I just finished a SIT TESOL cert in NYC and I feel it was worth every dollar. Much of that feeling derives from my appreciation for how much I grew with, learned with, and learned from my cohort. In addition, the practice teaching to actual English language learners was amazingly valuable.
I can't fathom an online course coming anywhere near the effectiveness of the course I took. If you want a cert that will actually help you as a teacher forget the online junk. But if you're just looking for a piece of paper, maybe online is good for that. |
